Basically I used to be able to read music and now I can't for it has been along time since I have even opened a piece of sheet music. What is the best possible way to teach myself now, is there any recommended books of some sort?
What did you play? I would suggest going online to look for free lessons on the simple stuff (where the notes are, what the time signature means, basic articulations, etc.), then going to a book of music and play through it. If you're looking for piano music, Bela Bartók's Mikrokosmos starts off very simple and becomes progressively more complex as the book goes on. The other thing I can recommend is writing or transcribing music; that got my sight-reading up like no other.
Trumpet and violin. Now I'm starting the bass and I thought I'd look at some sheet music for it, but now it is like a different language to me.
