Some 2,000 migrants tried to enter the Channel Tunnel terminal in Calais on Monday night in an attempt to reach the UK, operator Eurotunnel has said. A number of people were injured, a spokesman for Eurotunnel said, without elaborating. Eurotunnel is facing a daily struggle with migrants who attempt to smuggle themselves into Britain, sometimes with fatal consequences. The latest incident caused serious delays to Eurotunnel train services. Passengers were held up for about an hour on the British side and 30 minutes on the French side on Tuesday, French news agency AFP reported. Meanwhile, the UK has agreed to provide an extra £7m ($10.9m) towards efforts to step up security at the Channel Tunnel railhead in Calais, Home Secretary Theresa May has announced.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-33689473
Why would people be so desperate to emigrate to the UK? Even well-mannered people there followed the convicts here to Straya
attach a massive spiked cow-catcher to the train, and add many pitfalls and hydralisks into the tunnel itself. "sorry but you can't come in" is not going to stop them. illegal immigration damages countries beyond repair.

The workers who mined it were in some of the hellish mining conditions in modern times
Why would people be so desperate to emigrate to the UK? Even well-mannered people there followed the convicts here to Straya
Maybe that stupidly generous welfare system
Maybe that stupidly generous welfare system
You mean the one that doesn't benefit illegal immigrants ?
You mean the one that doesn't benefit illegal immigrants ?
Or nationals for the most part, really.
We should either decide to make security a priority, have armed guards to protect the tunnel or dismantle the thing. At the end of the day, it's neither the UK not Frances fault but the EU with their open-border policy that allowed these illegal migrants to walk through countries unchecked to the extent that they get here and suddenly are required to provide documents. France won't bother to try to remove them because there are too many and the EU's human rights charter makes it easy for illegal immigrants to resist.
Why would they not? UK is a fairly sweet place in Europe.
Yeah like 15-20 years ago. Not so much anymore from what I've heard.
Kick the Israelis out and give the country to these migrants.
I for one recommend automated turrets and electrified fences.
That's quite inefficient, we're dealing with a train here I say attach a jet engine to the top as to let the train move faster, and therefore plowing through more people
All these misguided comments. Oh my. Illegal immigrants cannot access benefits, not to mention that the benefit system uses less than 1% of our current gdp. Of course, most media outlets are owned by Rupert Murdock(Daily mail, the sun, ect)who famously despises anything which cannot be bought such as the NHS or any form of liberalism. If you're going to make assumptions about the UK, I would recommend reading a non bias news paper. The BBC is generally the best bet. Illegal immigrants are a basically not even a threat due bring unable to work most jobs nor access benefits. Legal immigration is slightly trickier but even then, most immigrants work the shifts and jobs nobody else wants to.
Legal immigration is slightly trickier but even then, most immigrants work the shifts and jobs nobody else wants to.
You make a good point. To me it seems that young people in England think themselves above kitchen work and janitorial duties, while folks from Eastern Europe tend to have an honest work ethic for such jobs.
Not tomention that Immigrants are actually contributing to social systems
Illegal immigrants are a basically not even a threat due bring unable to work most jobs nor access benefits.
If they have no opportunities that makes them a serious threat. They have no other choice, but to work on black market, or engage in other illegal/criminal stuff if they are desperate.
We should either decide to make security a priority, have armed guards to protect the tunnel or dismantle the thing.
how do you dismantle the channel tunnel exactly?
Not tomention that Immigrants are actually contributing to social systems
Yeah but when the migrants in question are breaking into trucks, climbing fences designed to keep people out, barricading roads, disrupting literally everyone who uses the channel tunnel, it's a little different in terms of being there legally than going through the proper channels to work and live here
Yeah like 15-20 years ago. Not so much anymore from what I've heard.
Yeah its so awful now that people are risking their life trekking through an underwater tunnel just to get here, When are ratings coming back so awful statements like this can be rightfully boxed out the door [editline]29th July 2015[/editline] And why arent the French police arresting those causing criminal damage by slashing their way into trucks and threatening the drivers? We've been too soft with our response to France over this shit.
I hope anyone who is caught coming through this tunnel is immediately deported, they clearly show they can't and wont bother with going through the proper channels, thusly they've lost any priviledge of becoming a citizen of the UK, or anywhere else.
And why arent the French police arresting those causing criminal damage by slashing their way into trucks and threatening the drivers? We've been too soft with our response to France over this shit.
Probably because, once they leave their country, they are no longer their problem. You can say it's in their interest they leave.
I hope anyone who is caught coming through this tunnel is immediately deported, they clearly show they can't and wont bother with going through the proper channels, thusly they've lost any priviledge of becoming a citizen of the UK, or anywhere else.
If read one of the news articles correctly, they can only be deported to the country where they first entered the EU. So, they can basically come back later and try again.
Probably because, once they leave their country, they are no longer their problem. You can say it's in their interest they leave.
Thats not an excuse for failing to protect the safety of thousands of lorry drivers, passengers and their goods.
Why would people be so desperate to emigrate to the UK? Even well-mannered people there followed the convicts here to Straya
Because our government give the vulnerable people benefits, unlike any other country in the EU. Hence why France are just not caring and letting them all through, because they have had nothing to do with them in the first place.
Because our government give the vulnerable people benefits, unlike any other country in the EU. Hence why France are just not caring and letting them all through, because they have had nothing to do with them in the first place.
please show the data
how do you dismantle the channel tunnel exactly?
You'd need several cleverly-placed explosive charges along the tunnel itself at its weakest point then the water will do the rest.
how do you dismantle the channel tunnel exactly?
Take all the space they dug out and move it somewhere else, duh.
This thread has some cracking posts
I for one recommend automated turrets and electrified fences.
I think big walls would suffice.
