Very cool. I've been thinking about getting a skateboard lately but I've been hesitant because of my age and generally unathletic life. Nice to hear from someone who started at 36.
I've been thinking about it as well, but there's no place to skate where I live. I tried skateboarding when I was ten, but I could never ollie.

I'm 20 and my friend and I both decided like a week ago that we wanted to start skating (even though we thought we were too old) so it's nice to see this tbh
you cant ollie after a week or a month of skating, and if you do it's beginner's luck. you gotta keep trying, just like everything in life
This is just objectively wrong. I've been on a skateboard less than 10 hours in my life and I can do it. Not super well or high, but I can do it. I also landed a kickflip. Then shortly after faceplanted into the concrete because I sneezed and lost my balance. :v:

Had a bit of a slip out a few weeks ago and buggered my back in the process as I'm becoming an old fuck so it's been a while since I've tried

I got a skateboard a couple of weeks ago as a result of the braille skate videos. I used to skate when I was a lot younger (I'm 23 now), but never anything more than just moving around on it. So far I've been practising my ollie, I've had a few good ones so far and at the moment it's really just about improving consistency more than anything else. As a hobby it's been a lot of fun so far, great workout and gives me reason to get out of the house more often.
I got a skateboard for the first time a few months ago and I've come to realize just how fucked up my local town's sidewalks are.
This thread is so weird to read, just because most people here are in a similar situation to me. I'm also 23 & I got my first skateboard a few months ago, around March I think. But I can't skate it at all since I don't practice at it because I found out that I have a weird anxiety over the thought of people seeing me with a skateboard & I don't have any friends that can skate or want to learn so that kills my motivation.

Be pretty ace to run into someone in the exact same situation as me. When I go to skateparks I feel like everyone there is expecting me to be good because I'm one of the oldest there when really I'm really struggling and hate people watching me. I go to my local park at about 8pm when it's completely empty, if there's anyone there and I can't convince anyone to come with then I go home. Braille really speaks to 23 year olds apparently.
I can't believe he's 49, he looks like a college kid.
I got a skateboard for the first time a few months ago and I've come to realize just how fucked up my local town's sidewalks are.
I've been skateboarding since grade school and I still refuse to skate street 99.9% of the time since getting a car. It's just horrid, your feet go numb from hours of that clunk-a-clunk movement along the sidewalk, and in Arizona the street absorbs so much heat that it radiates it outwards and can burn your feet through the soles of your shoes on that black griptape.
Judging by this thread, Braille seems to have a good audience of 20-somethings wanting to learn how to skate after watching their videos, or people who used to skate as a kid but never actually picked it up. I mostly want to start with a longboard since I just like the feeling of picking up speed and the wind, and with a longboard people won't expect me to know any tricks. I'm just worried about busting my face trying something stupid if I got a normal deck. But after seeing this video, it probably isn't too late to learn how to skate and learn tricks, especially having slightly more body coordination than I did as a kid.

I skated a little when I was like 13/14 but I got a decent deck to start again (I'm 21) the other month to mess around on. Only really put any effort into learning stuff again in the last week but I can land a pop shuvit 50% of the time. Only thing is I cant ollie on the move as I keep twisting my body and not landing them straight.
oh shit braille! I used to skateboard as a kid, did it for like 3 years but couldn't even ollie during that time (I just liked going fast), started watching these guy's videos a few months ago and it made me want to get back into it. I bought a new board and everything, and there's a pretty nice skatepark in my city but I've only been there once so far since (I was just skating around trying to get a feel for it again and fell pretty hard, heard a bunch of kids laughing, holy shit is that ever discouraging). These guys did help me understand how to ollie and I've been practicing in my basement for a bit, managed to get it down somewhat thought I am not too interested in doing street/flatground stuff, I still just like going fast and using ramps and stuff. Am sick of the format most skateboard channels use now (all caps titles/like 5 minutes of filler material before you get to the stuff that's actually relevant to the title of the video/really clickbait-y titles) but I'm still workin up the courage to go back, need to go at like 6 am when there's nobody else in the park...
19 year old here, i started about 3 weeks ago I had snowboarded a lot before so I was pretty quick to learn, and i started riding down hills and stuff pretty fast. One night my friend asked me if I wanted to try his longboard and i said sure its probably the same shit. I took it down a big hill and ate shit. I'm gonna have to wear a knee brace and walk on crutches for a while plus i'm coveed in road burn. The doctor thinks i tore a ligament or something. Lesson learned? dont longboard

I have had a few strange looks from (mostly older) people going past in cars, but I've also had some funny ones. A couple of guys driving past gave me finger horns, and one old dear actually stopped her car to tell me she was "very impressed." I'm not sure what she was referring to since all I was doing was practising pushing a bit faster, but it was nice I suppose! [editline]1st August 2016[/editline] For the record, I'm in Bagshot, in Surrey. There are no skateparks in the immediate vicinity, I'll have to make an effort to go to one in Camberley or Farnborough.
21 here, gettin' that skate itch thanks to Braille as well. Was always more BMX but i'm always down to learn a new skill.
I've been skating since I was about 12 I believe. I'm pretty okay, ive got a good set of flip tricks nailed down and some fun free style stuff. I actually just landed my first impossible the other day, so that was cool. My cousin started at 24 and can do some pretty nutty stuff consistently after only a few months. Skatings all about the love and the determination. It's entirely skill based, and you can only get that from practice. Took me like two months to learn how to Ollie/nollie correctly. It's an awesome hobby and super fun. Keep with it guys for sure, and hit me up if you're in the Midwest area. I'm a Chicago local and would love to help you guys out [editline]1st August 2016[/editline] Don't let the lack of skateparks or good areas stop you, find some gnarly flat ground and become a real Rodney Mullen
longboards are so fun; just limited with tricks/etc. I just generally enjoy the ride much more than a skateboard
22 here, just started skating too, and because of braile too. Probably like 2 weeks now. I guess it's never late to start. So far I just roll around a big cycling path in the city and thinking of starting practicing an Ollie or something. Interesting to see there's many people of the same age group just starting this. Do we have a skating thread?
i was an unathletic stick when I started skating and it helped me get into shape. i haven't done it in 5 years or so because i lost interest but it was a great workout and i met some cool people too. I knew a ton of overweight dudes that were great skaters so don't let that scare you away if you want to try it out. I used to skate a lot when I was a kid. I wasn't particularly good at it, but I was able to land ollies and sometimes even kickflips. Sadly, when I later reached middle school a group of kids started picking on me because of it (mostly because I was wearing a helmet I guess, I remember a guy in 5th class calling me a cork-head when I was in third.) and it turned me off completely from skating. Now that I'm older I'm starting to feel like I want to go out and skate again, especially after re-playing the Tony Hawk series and accidentally stumbling upon the south-bank spot during my trip to London. Once I get home I'm gonna see if I can find my old board again. Last time I saw it the screws that held the trucks had rusted a bit, but other than that it seemed to have aged fine.
Interesting to see there's many people of the same age group just starting this. Do we have a skating thread?
We used to have one back when there was still a hobby sub-forum. I don't think there is one now though. We could perhaps start a thread in GD, but I'm not sure how long it will last.
I would love for someone to start a skating thread, nice to see so many people around my age are just starting to get into it now too!
a skating thread would be cool, I started last year to get around campus and it's a nice way to actually enjoy moving around and only slightly terrifying because of how under construction our roads are :v: my town actually has a pretty cool park, unfortunately whoever designed it wasn't much of a skater I guess so it doesn't flow very well (the whole thing also isn't level) whenever fp 2.0 comes someone should make an action sports section
