"OMG" and "LOL" enter The Oxford English Dictionary
They have long been a feature of text messages and now the abbreviations OMG and LOL have been recognised in the Oxford English Dictionary.
The abbreviation for Oh My God (OMG) and Laughing Out Loud (LOL) are joined by FYI (For Your Information), IMHO (In My Humble Opinion) and Wag (Wives and girlfriends) as new entries in the latest edition of the Oxford English Dictionary Online.
The dictionary says that the first quotation for OMG is from a personal letter from 1917 while LOL was first used in 1960 but denoted Little Old Lady.
The rise of the term Wag follows a report in a newspaper that the staff at the England football team's World Cup training camp referred to the players' wives collectively as Wags.
It has since become a popular term used in the media.
Also for the first time in the dictionary is flat white, explained as "a style of espresso drink with finely textured foamed milk", banh mi (also known as a Vietnamese sandwich); taquito (a crisp-fried snack); and kleftiko (a Greek dish of slow cooked lamb).
Don't give them any ideas.
In before fail being referred to as a noun instead of a verb.
I fucking hate my generation, sometimes...

"The dog wanted to wag his tail"

That's pretty interesting. I would have thought that these would have been created in the last 20 years.
Also, I've never heard of WAG in my life.

:eng101:
Well this is dumb.
You know everything is becoming shit when we add non-words to the dictionary.
The only places I have ever heard the word WAG were in women's magazines
Doesn't really bother me. Modern English is full of stupid words that used to be controversial. Would you rather we revert to Old English?

The dictionary is full of words that used to be "non-words."
:eng101:
An acronym is an initialism that's pronounced as a word, like SCUBA, so technically only LOL is an acronym. Unless you say ohmg or something, then you're just an idiot.
e: Even then LOL is barely one seeing as how it's often said as l oh l. So in summary you're wrong.
:eng101:
ee: Also to all people complaining about what the engl language is becoming or whatever: Shut up. The english language is fluid and it changes with usage and times, and dictionaries are meant to reflect that, they're not the arbitrator of the language itself. If you want a language that actually has an organization that regulates usage, go speak french or something.

Not an abbreviation.

Which you're going through for the articles, I'm sure.
The day 'Belieber' is in the dictionary is the day I day.
