I'm a non-smoker that's intrigued by the habit of smoking alone, but I hate nicotine, so I've wanted to know more about vaporizers to see if it's something safe for me to adopt.
I see countless people, both that smoke and do not, using them nowadays and there seems to be more and more variations coming out that just overwhelm my thoughts on what I think should be correct for me.
So, two things I'd like to know more about:
1. What kind of vaporizers are there and what's recommended for starters like myself?
2. What kinds of liquid/solids are safe to use and your thoughts on the best hit?
Please refrain from using chemical/compound names too much unless giving an explanation, as I'm not likely to understand.
A mate of mine is actually making one, maybe when the prototype gets out of prototyping he'll be willing to ship abroad. I'd say it's definitely a nice vape for a starter since it allows you to set the temperature yourself, and you'll see when the temperature gets high enough for the material you put in it to be vaporized. I guess it would work with multiple substances, we've only tried it with weed.
Apart from that though, I really have no idea what to recommend for starters - all I know is the vaporizer he's making works very efficiently.
There's also the magic flight.
[t]http://magicflightboxvaporizer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Magic-Flight-Launch-Box.jpg[/t]
It's stealthy, odorless and works very efficiently. I know for sure it works with weed, not sure what else it would work with. And, of course, being a vaporizer, your lungs are damaged minimally. I suppose this is the best option if you want to smoke alone.
IMO I found the magic flights to be a little weak for my liking, my friend has one. I'd imagine getting the power adapter accessory (so you can plug it into the wall for more consistent power) would be essential so you get more powerful hits.

yeah from what I read you use a whole battery to hit one bowl? if that's true that is incredibly shitty and the cord would be pretty much required
I've been looking into the Arizer Solo myself because it sounds pretty good and you can get them for like ~$160, but I've been trying to see if anyone here's tried one so I know for sure if it's good or not

It takes a lot of power for 1 AA battery to heat up the bowl hot enough to vape weed.
I got this kit just through the door:

The liquid's nicotine, since it was part of a starting kit, but once I'm finished with that bottle I'll look for nicotine-free ones (anybody know a good brand?)
Also, eventually once I try weed, I might get a new pen that can use solids, any recommendations?
Recommendations: Not the Bullet. Got one and it's no good for solids, tends to burn 'em.

Can't you use BHO or any other oils with those vapes? Unless the temperature is different, i heard people made those, also with caffeine.

I got an Arizer Solo.
It's great for how much weed I used to smoke. It kinda feels hard to inhale, like you're not getting much air in at once. But if you inhale slowly, you can easily build up a nice big cloud of vapor in not that long at all.
It heats up really fucking fast. The glass stem that you use to load the bowl in can fit a decent amount of weed in it, and will vaporize all of it by the time you're done. Also, you can make vaporizer stem milk with your glass stem when it gets dirty instead of cleaning it out and wasting what's left.
Smooth hits, though I've had some harsh hits off it when I've been vaping a bowl at the max temperature for a while. Might just be my lungs though. Great taste. Didn't taste anything other than vaped weed, quite delicious. I used to vape in my room with the door closed, and when I woke up in the morning the smell would be gone. Even if I had only slept a few hours.
Just make sure you're ok with the 7 different temperature settings, because as far as I know, you can't set it to any other temperature than one of those 7 ones.
When I first put in my glass stem, it seemed like it didn't fit right. I got it in easily enough though after a few seconds. Now however, the glass stem moves around just a very tiny bit. This isn't such a big problem though, as it allows me to draw in more air if I want to, and clear the stem real quickly.
The battery lasts over an hour in my experience. It will last more or less, depending on which temperature you use. There is a cover for the hole that leads to the heating disc, so you can cover it up when you're packing a new bowl, so you don't lose heat as quickly. That way, you use even less battery, as it doesn't have to heat up as much for your next bowl. Also, it takes about 2 hours or less to charge it up completely from an empty battery.
You can also buy an adapter for it if you like. It won't charge it, but it will let you plug it into the wall and have power, and not use your battery. I use it when I'm at home, and keep the full battery for when I'm using it outside. Never had problems with the battery before having the adapter though. It would last so long that I'd get so high that I couldn't vape until it was out of charge. Then I'd just plug it into the charger, and by the time I'd sober up enough, I recovered about the charge that I had already used.
I like it, but one day, I would also like to have something like the volcano vaporizer. But even with the volcano, I'd still like to have something more portable.
Take your time and research this shit man, it will be worth it when you get a good vape that you're happy with. Maybe try going with a vape that has been around for a while. That way you know exactly what you're getting, as other people have been using that vape and already found out if it is shit or not.
Fuck, I just stopped smoking weed, haven't used my vaporizer in a while, but now I want to again after remembering my times with it.
A Pax is amazing for vaporizing herbs, I personally have one. It's really stealthy and efficient.

It's pretty expensive though ($250USD) but definitely worth it if you are thinking long term.
Really smooth when vaping, just feels like warm air when inhaling. Not harsh at all. When you exhale, you get a pretty clean and great taste of whatever herbs you put in there.
For weed, smell can be a factor in a small room or in a tightly packed crowd, but other than that it is very discreet.
When I vape in my room with the window open, the smell is gone within a few minutes.
Very sleek as well. It looks like some old ipod at first glance so nobody will question if they see it.
VERY effective for vaping weed. Different temperatures for personal preference (low, medium, high), simple, and a great quality build.
It has to be cleaned quite a lot, but doesn't take too long to clean it. I highly recommend.
[editline]31st May 2014[/editline]
Also you can play Simon on it
^This, I started out with the magic flight a couple months ago as my first vape and moved up to the pax shortly after and absolutely love it. I have used it multiple times daily for the past 3 months and am still impressed by it's efficiency. You do have to clean it quite often but that's the only downside (if that is a downside). But yeah highly recommend the pax well worth the price imo.
Yep, it's fantastic. Forgot to also mention that it comes with a lifetime warranty.
Off topic, but do you know about the screen trick for the pax?
Can't you use BHO or any other oils with those vapes? Unless the temperature is different, i heard people made those, also with caffeine.
you could, but I wouldn't recommend it. usually oil is pretty thick so it's a bitch to get in, plus it burns the shit out of it
it burns the shit out of it
Isn't that what you're supposed to do?

The brand of the liquids honestly doesn't matter, Its all glycerine (to provide the vapour) and propylene glycol (sometimes included, it provides the throat hit afaik) with a flavouring of whatever
You can even make the liquid yourself, if you arent interested in the throat hit just head on down to sainsburys or something, pick up a bottle of glycerine from the cake aisle, a little bottle of flavouring and mix your own. If you DO want the throat hit you can buy PG on amazon.
The glycerine might to too thick to use right away so just add drops (DROPS, not too much) until it reaches suitable consistency

you should be vaporizing it, not burning it. it's pretty wasteful

Ok buying one for sure, thanks guys!
No one mentioned anything made by Da Vinci yet?
Anyway the Ascent by Da Vinci is one of the coolest vaporizers I've had the pleasure of messing around with. They aren't cheap though so you really want to be serious about vaping before getting one unless you are rich and hate money.

You have to mix it in with Vegetable Glycerin\Propylene Glycol (the base of literally every ejuice), at a ~2:1 ratio in favor of the VG\PG.

You'll want to shop around and buy flavors, but honestly you're better off doing it all yourself. It isn't hard at all.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H4C6L2I/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i03?ie=UTF8&psc=1
http://www.amazon.com/Propylene--Highest-Quality-Available-From-Element/dp/B00I1K0PZG/ref=sr_1_1?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1401754399&sr=1-1&keywords=propylene+glycol
Those two are the base, I personally just use a 50\50 mix.
Next you need flavors. I just got Chai Tea, and Key Lime\Bavarian Cream, only tried the Chai so far but it's amazing.
http://www.v-ecigs.com/flavorings-by-seedman/
http://www.v-ecigs.com/flavorings/
There's also additives like menthol\caffine\etc. I haven't used any of them yet, but they're an option.
http://www.v-ecigs.com/additives/
You'll want at least one syringe or a pipette (I just grabbed both to see which one I like more because they're cheap)
http://www.v-ecigs.com/syringes-needles-and-pipettes/
You'll obviously need bottles to put the juice in, I grabbed two of the Cobalt Blue Glass ones. It drips out a little slowly, but I have an RDA so I don't need to fill up a tank and it works out perfectly for me, plus I'd prefer the glass over plastic and it's only a couple cents more.
http://www.v-ecigs.com/bottles/
To figure out how much of the flavoring to use, they have a calculator that's amazing. It also tells you how much you're spending on it. I made 10ml of the Chai to start out and that batch worked out to ~0.44¢ for the whole 10ml. Probably less because I got the PG\VG in larger batches than what they sell and just mixed it myself in the bottle.
http://www.v-ecigs.com/e-juice-calculator/
It might sound complicated, but it's really easy as fuck. The process was literally to measure out 4.5ml of the VG in the syringe, put it in the bottle, same with the PG, and then measure out 1ml of the chai, put that in the bottle, put the cap on, shake it, and it was done. I also have enough flavoring to make ~7 more batches. So for $1.99 plus the cost of the PG\VG which I got anyway for a separate project, I got 8 10ml bottles of juice.
Never buying premixed juice again.

Davinci if you want to go HAM
The original Da vinci has a huge widespread problem of offgassing from uncured silicone when there is nothing in the chamber at high temps, I did actually see this for myself when I picked one up before the pax and returned it the next day. I dunno about the Ascent but I have heard it still is a problem with that model.
Massdrop is great

Too bad I don't have money to buy anything over the next 1-3 days when the Arizer is sold on this drop.
is that a vape that you're supposed to use inside a car?
is that a vape that you're supposed to use inside a car?
Heh, yeah it is. Plugs right into your cigarette coil-heater thingy (12V plug). I can't see how it can possibly be legal considering you're gonna be shooting huge plumes of vapor in your car completely blocking your vision.
Might aswell post my current setup, feel free to ask questions about anything. I can bring you up to speed with no problems.

The SVD isn't my only mod but it's my favorite and it can measure Ohms so I use it for building coils.
Basic info about what I'm using:
Kayfun Lite Plus (Rebuildable atomizer, single coil build)
iTaste SVD (VV/VW Mod)
18650 Efest 2600mAh battery
Kicks out giant clouds, within 2-3 puffs my apartment looks like a 1950's roadside diner, dense fog everywhere lol.

It's actually a 10 year warranty, might've gotten it confused with the MFLB's lifetime warranty?
I just recently got a volcano (digital) vaporizer for like 90 dollars from a buddy who never used it. It is my first plug in vape and it was worth it.. I dont think its really worth 700 new honestly. but its a really great vape

You need to use a better higher mAH battery with your flight box to make the most of it. The stock batteries are shit.
I own the flight box, it's great for a starter vaporizer, and the lifetime warranty is a nice perk.
Myself and some friends own a couple of Airizer Extreme Qs and they are some of the best desktop vaporizers for the money (price/value wise). Head shop owners have told me they'd rather have 4 Extreme Qs than 1 Volcano.
one more pax recommendation. this thing fuckin rules
one more pax recommendation. this thing fuckin rules
The Pax seems cool, I need to try it with some fresh tree, last time I tried the Pax it tasted terrible, but that was due to the dingus putting tobacco in it. The only thing I don't like about the Pax is that it seems that you have to put your mouth over the orifice to hit it correctly.
