• NYPD handing out flyers strongly compelling people to upgrade to iOS 7
If you’re walking around New York City this afternoon, you may be handed a flyer by the NYC Police Department with a “Public Awareness Notice” for so-called “Apple users”. This note informs users of iPhone and iPad devices that upgrading to iOS 7 will add security features that will keep these devices from being reprogrammed without an Apple ID and Password. These notes go on to suggest that “additional information on iOS 7 features” can be found at Apple’s homepage.
Source: http://topinfopost.com/2013/09/22/nypd-have-been-stopping-people-and-asking-them-to-upgrade-to-ios7 Another: http://nypost.com/2013/09/24/nypd-urges-apple-ios7-download/ Another: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2429685/Are-NYPD-Apple-payroll-Cops-hand-flyers-urging-people-upgrade-devices-iOS7-safer.html Another: http://gizmodo.com/the-nypd-really-really-wants-you-to-upgrade-to-ios-7-1363960613 Another: http://rt.com/usa/nypd-apple-iphone-io7-245/ I wonder if Apple are paying anything to the NYPD for this wonderful message boy service...
Well thats disquieting.
I wonder if something darker is going on, like an easier backdoor in iOS 7 for police/FBI/NSA.
Well I don't know for sure but apparently iOS 7 may have inbuilt functionality for features of a device to be disabled at will i.e. the camera at a given time by authorities.
Apple has patented a piece of technology which would allow government and police to block transmission of information, including video and photographs, from any public gathering or venue they deem “sensitive”, and “protected from externalities.” In other words, these powers will have control over what can and cannot be documented on wireless devices during any public event. And while the company says the affected sites are to be mostly cinemas, theaters, concert grounds and similar locations, Apple Inc. also says “covert police or government operations may require complete ‘blackout’ conditions.”
Yeahh the police are in on something The whole fingerprint thing apple says is inaccessible, i don't trust it, i don't mind getting my pictures on the internet but my fingerprints?? yeah right. Fuck fingerprint scanners [editline]24th September 2013[/editline]
Well I don't know for sure but apparently iOS 7 may have inbuilt functionality for features of a device to be disabled at will i.e. the camera at a given time by authorities.
Fuck that shit
wasn't the new security shit already cracked?
The whole fingerprint thing apple says is inaccessible, i don't trust it, i don't mind getting my pictures on the internet but my fingerprints?? yeah right.
It doesn't actually take your fingerprint, it uses another system.
or maybe it's just that there's a problem with iphones getting stolen in NY so they're just encouraging people to take advantage of new security features?
It doesn't actually take your fingerprint, it uses another system.
The whole 'it doesn't take fingerprint in it's exact format so it's fine' argument is stupid. The whole point of fingerprints is to uniquely identify a person. This means that even if an apple device just stores a list of special intersections in your fingerprints instead of the whole image, this list of intersections can still be used to uniquely identify you, effectively serving the same purpose as raw fingerprints. This is why I think the whole new fingerprint scanner fad is horrible and will only serve as more ways you can be uniquely identified by law enforcement/the government or even hackers that steal your data file(and yes a out of control and power hungry government can be a hacker too, if they haven't added 'legal' backdoors already).
Anyone else reminded of the "go upgrade at a LIMB clinic" thing in Deus Ex: Human Revolution?
Why would I take software security advice from them? What record of good advice have they given in the past? What do they know about software? maybe from the feds but the NYPD? Why IOS7? Because it has a failsafe and you can turn it off remotely? that's it? seems really out of nowhere
iOS7 probably (finally) allows for 911 to activate your camera and see whats going on.
iOS7 is running like shit on my families iPad 3rd generation

That's cool for me, since the closest thing I have to a phone is an AN/PRC 148.
Any confirmation on this disabling from government officials? If so off to an android phone I go
-snip, late-
iOS7 is running like shit on my families iPad 3rd generation
It's running on my iPad 2 just fine.
The funny thing is that the security measures don't do shit as you can just put an iOS device into DFU/restore mode and restore it to scratch, which most people stealing a device will want to do I wouldn't have doubts about them stating this because of a backdoor in iOS 7, considering there's been talk about making it easier for law enforcement to "do their jobs"
Excellent paranoia from Facepunch, 10/10! Seriously, does EVERYTHING have to be a government conspiracy?
Excellent paranoia from Facepunch, 10/10! Seriously, does EVERYTHING have to be a government conspiracy?
you're not fooling anyone mr. president!!
Jokes on them, my 3GS can't upgrade to iOS7! HA
Excellent paranoia from Facepunch, 10/10! Seriously, does EVERYTHING have to be a government conspiracy?
You're telling me you're not suspicious about this after the whole NSA/PRISM scandal?
No way, I ain't upgrading to lose my jailbreak.
iOS7 probably (finally) allows for 911 to activate your camera and see whats going on.
911 would like to facetime
I would have updated probably 5 months ago when i saw the GUI but now i think the look sucks. Also, i always liked to know what Apple updates included because they have and will use it to screw you over sneakily but i think the train finally stops here for me.
Nope, gotta wait for a untethered jailbreak which will prob take a month or 3.
'Strongly compelling' is such a sensationalist term.
or maybe it's just that there's a problem with iphones getting stolen in NY so they're just encouraging people to take advantage of new security features?
Nah, that would make too much sense so obviously that's wrong. Anything that the big bad government would want to get would have been added a long time ago. Chances are if you own an iPhone, anything you are worried about with iOS 7 is already in 6 and back. Also the government and the police getting your fingerprint helps you if you are the victim of a crime. Hurts you if you are the one committing it, of course.
The update adds that tracking software for when your phone gets stolen.. So it would make sense from a legal pov, to let citizens be aware that if there phone is stolen, they can use that tracking app, send it to the police, and let them sort it out. Just a guess...
