I'm coming to Facepunch in search of serious answers. I need to know what materials, amounts, weight, size, and if you can, prices of materials that would be required to build an airship, similar to a blimp but an actual ship (think wooden, watch Pirates of the Caribbean if you need to know what a wooden ship is) attached to a large balloon which provides lift. I am not coming here in search of BS answers or comments like "It's impossible," "You'd get arrested for flying it," or "think of the Hindenburg" comments. IF you absolutely have to say that, then post them here: http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=958915 . I'm only interested in serious answers, such as the weight per square inch of a lightweight wood or the amount of helium required to lift 2,000lbs. I've got a theory for changing the altitude of this vessel once lift has been achieved, but all ideas are welcome. I also need any ideas on how to propel it forward, possibly backwards, and turning, as well as what material to use for the balloon to prevent helium leakage. Just for the record, 1, it's not impossible, 2,I've researched what exactly would be needed to legally pilot a lighter than aircraft, and 3, I plan to use nonflammable Helium, unlike the Hindenburg, which used flammable Hydrogen. Apart from all this, please assume that I can obtain all materials and permits and I have the room to build this. Just post anything from the weight of the ship itself to how to attach the ship to the balloon using rope in a serious manner.
Facepunch are not aerospace engineers. Building anything like this is extremely complicated and dangerous if not done exactly right.

Neither are you a grammar expert
if youve got the money, ive got the stuff

Anyways OP. What would this be used for EXACTLY. It would help a lot on what I could reccomend

...I am...
Well, in a few years...
If you have to come to facepunch for help then your craft will be doomed for failure. I'd suggest a forum about aviation or lighter-than-air enthusiasts or something. Facepunch is full of prepubescent teenagers.
Though I'd assume you'd need a shitload of helium. Which would cost a lot. There's a reason why the crew compartment on airships are tiny compared to the balloon. The size of balloon you would need would be ridiculous. Only going up up up in cost for each square meter you add.

Offtopic... What branch are you studying in?
From my searches, it seems like a litre of helium gas can lift approximately 6 grams..
2000 pounds = 907 200 grams
You'd need 151200 litres of gas. 907.2 cubic meters. It's a lot.
Hindenburg held 200000 litres of gas, but it was filled with hydrogen, which lifts more.
I doubt you're ever going to make it.
What? You want to make some stupid little fantasy pirate airship? That is impossible. There's a reason they're built like they are.

As I said before, Hindenburg=HYDROGEN. Me=Helium. Wouldn't hurt to read the entire post.
It would be good if you manage to build it, it would be a interesting sight. :)
Good luck. :buddy:

that was hydrogen
Do you have an engineer degree or similar?
I don't want to discourage, but Airships and blimps aren't just "fill it with helium or hydrogen and it flies", without proper knowledge, you could kill yourself and other people.

This is why I'm putting forth years of research before I begin anything near construction.

Don't bother it wont work either way.
Don't waste your life k?

Oh I can imagine the novelty wearing off in a week.
By what you want to build, I'd assume you'd need a construction hanger that rivals NASA's VAB, or the Boeing Plant in size.(two of the biggest/most expensive buildings on earth) What are your funds for this? These thing's aren't cheap.
Erm, the hydrogen wasn't necessarily the main problem in the hindenburg disaster.
It still would have been fucked with helium, the ignition of the outer skin(possibly due to flammable paint and static buildup) was the main problem, explosions just sped it up.

This thread being posted after 3 years of initial idea.
To be honest if you need help figuring out the basic construction of a rather ambitious project you're doing it completely wrong.

I hope you don't suffer the same fate...
...As in you don't actually go on your balloon and use it as a ruse for national attention.

Either I've met you before or you nabbed this from the thread where this comment belongs.

I'd say your a dumbass, but considering your pic is a GIF of Justin Bieber, I can tell this isn't your first big mistake.
Seriously though, how do you plan on funding this?
