PROGRESSIVE CLICKBAIT: THE ARTICLE
tl;dr marketing.
I feel like the list of people who actually care that the protagonist was shown as a woman is much smaller than the group of people who don't care at all.
I know protagonist genders don't bother me any. I'm sure many of you are the same way.
When I first saw the trailer, I didn't really catch who the protagonist was. Now that I know... I don't care; my character will look the way I want man or woman. Making a bigger deal out of nothing for the sake of readers... typical.
If the game doesn't have too much filler content like Dragon Age: Inquisition, I'll play both male and female once just like I did with ME1 and 2. That's what I'm most worried about with this new Mass Effect.
oh
that was the protagonist?
The media still playing the gender card in video games..
I miss the late 90s videogaming, where no one couldn't give a flying fuck what gender the protagonist was.
Clearly socjus marketing
I'm well aware of the history of women and space, but this is 2016.
I'm well aware of the history of women and space, but this is 2016.
what
why didn't they show both?
what
this is bioware we're talking about, who have been pushing the whole gays and women thing in their games since mass effect 2. given that today's world is full of women going "we're strong and equal, see these people and characters!" as opposed to back in the day, when women weren't whining and were actually out getting shit done (see sally ride).
why didn't they show both?
Because it literally doesn't matter.
why didn't they show both?
Because they have a distinct agenda, and why would they spend that kind of money. Marketers are already cartoonishly overpaid as it is.
Manveer Heir has been spending more time attending literal SJW conventions as the keynote speaker about "how _______ must change because _______ isn't your audience anymore" and starting semantic fights on twitter with alleged white people he doesn't even know for their privilege while taking a picture of himself with his "male tears cup" than he has working on the game's combat, of which he is charge d'affairs of. (I know this man personally, and he hasn't ever even kind of been poor or held back at any point in his life, ever, even in the old QA/College days. Ever.)
Same for Aaryn Flynn. Nigga spends more time telling people to fuck off for criticizing their products than he does herding the cats like he's supposed to.
So you can continue to act like there isn't an agenda, or you can read the article and google around for these gentlemen's completely public exploits.
That said, it's their choice what to highlight, and if they want to somehow casts themselves as the corporate savior of the lgbt/"progressive" gaming community and the most progressive dev on earth :v:, let them.
I ain't buying shit unless it's good, and as we can see from the preview material, they stuck Humanity as the Master Most Important Race already, they have a super derivative race as the secondary and introductory antagonists, and they already look to be hiding exposition and worldbuilding issues behind "my waifu". (literally, when asked at a con what they were doing to fix the writing inconsistency issues of the past two games, the responder got a fifteen minute advertorial for the 'super deep and advanced romance system' as if that was peoples' problem with the series.)
This article is right there in that same vein, "if you don't like this game you have internalized _____." Already starting down that road, which tells me pretty clearly they don't have enough bullet points on the box for the product to stand on its own without a media push, and stuff like "ya know we have jetpacks, but we're gonna blow 12% of the budget on the Mako instead of making playable races, because that's what people want in the Mass Effect universe, a tank that drives like an inflatable raft set on fire, fuck all that worldbuilding and storycrafting rpg shit, that's fucking nerd shit."
Can't wait for the game to permanently shame me for playing with a male character if this shit keeps up.
Can't wait for the game to permanently shame me for playing with a male character if this shit keeps up.
What kind of stupid leap of logic is that?
"Bluh they're using a woman on the marketing, can't wait for them to go full on essjaydubya on me for the whole game :CC"
“Our games let you choose your main character, I think everyone gets that nowadays. You don't need to see a character to identify with, in the same way you might on a movie poster. People want to create their own characters, customize them, and we're embracing that.”
Yeah sure sounds like they're gonna force this optional female protag thing down your throat huh
The way people get so worked up over stuff like this fucking baffles me.
Can't wait for the game to permanently shame me for playing with a male character if this shit keeps up.
Yeah, I remember when Mass Effect 1 shamed me for playing Femshep :(
Hang on. That was the main character? She's in the trailer for like 3 seconds. I thought it was just generic human soldier/marine/whatever.
They probably could have made it clearer.
Hey you could have been stuck with Mark Meer having NO clue what Shepard was about. He didn't hit his stride until about halfway through 2.

I generally disapprove of your tone when you go on a rant like that, but fuck me if you haven't got a way with words. You make reading posts entertaining.

damn it, this is what i basically said, but your wording was much better.
What I find more funny is how they went with the recently popular face direction. It looks very similar to Ellie, the chick from twin souls, Goty Lara and a bunch of others.
how many mass effect games are they going to make until i can choose my race. humans are fucking boring in these sorts of universes.

Back then the media would get upset over us running over people with cars in a game
Now they get angry that the driver was wearing a bikini or something
how many mass effect games are they going to make until i can choose my race. humans are fucking boring in these sorts of universes.
there aren't mods to let you play as other races? that's kind of silly. i wouldn't mind being garrus' long-lost half-cousin.

Well, you should thank voiced rpgs. Used to be they made multiple backstories for the characters. No more.

Eh. From what I've seen in the past, most of the mods just change what hairstyle or outfit femshep has
Man, that fem protagonist is ugly as fuck
Bioware is so laughably bad at creating faces
