WASHINGTON -- Vice President Joe Biden said transgender discrimination is "the civil rights issue of our time" during a visit to a Florida field office on Tuesday, according to pool reports. Biden was meeting with volunteers at an Obama for America office in Sarasota, Fla., when he singled out one woman "who he thought had beautiful eyes," reads the pool report. The woman said something to Biden that was inaudible to the pool reporter, but Biden responded to her by saying it was the "civil rights issue of our time." The woman, Linda Carragher Bourne of Sarasota, later said her daughter was Miss Trans New England and that she had asked Biden if he would help them. "A lot of my friends are being killed, and they don't have the civil rights yet. These guys are gonna make it happen," Bourne told the reporter. The vice president has been a steadfast ally to the LGBT community. He told gay rights advocates in August that they are "freeing the soul of the American people." Most notably, however, he got out in front of President Barack Obama in May when he unexpectedly announced that he is "absolutely comfortable" with same-sex marriage. Obama, at the time, was still "evolving" on the issue. Four days later, the president endorsed same-sex marriage. When he made his announcement, Obama noted that Biden "probably got out a little bit over his skis, but out of generosity of spirit."
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/30/joe-biden-transgender-rights_n_2047275.html weeee
Hear hear.
Even being Transgender, I wouldn't call it individually as the main one, but I'd say yes easily to the greater topic of LGBT rights as a whole.
I wouldn't necessarily call it THE civil rights issue of our time but it's definitely up there.
I think all aspects of LGBTQ are up there equally... Most of the above leave you portrayed and treated as sub-human. :(
really cool of biden to recognize us at the very least i'd like acceptance among more lgbt peope. its suprising how many gay people hate transfolk
really cool of biden to recognize us at the very least i'd like acceptance among more lgbt peope. its suprising how many gay people hate transfolk
It's disgusting how many time I've heard people say MtF people are just slightly feminine men who want to transition just because they don't feel manly enough, and how FtM people are just women who are too oppressed by the glass ceiling. Makes me seethe with rage.
Woah, biden spoke with his brain. I can actually somewhat agree* with the man now. *Somewhat agree as in not just transgender, but LBGT discrimination in general.
I don't follow him closely, but Biden generally seems to be a pretty cool guy? Not sure why he gets hate.
I don't follow him closely, but Biden generally seems to be a pretty cool guy? Not sure why he gets hate.
He has a tendency to say some pretty dumb things that make a lot of people go "Ohgod dude really?"
He has a tendency to say some pretty dumb things that make a lot of people go "Ohgod dude really?"
not really
He has a tendency to say some pretty dumb things that make a lot of people go "Ohgod dude really?"
No, he doesn't actually. Out of everything he says, the Media loves to cherry pick. The Vice Presidential debate was the actual Joe Biden.
Wait for it...
No, he doesn't actually. Out of everything he says, the Media loves to cherry pick.
where have I heard this before
where have I heard this before
From anyone who gets annoyed eventually with the fact that the media cherry picks everything. Sound bites everywhere.
I think all aspects of LGBTQ are up there equally... Most of the above leave you portrayed and treated as sub-human. :(
i think trans people definitely get the worst of it, followed by gays/lesbians and then bisexuals.
I think the prejudice against and the dehumanisation of drug users is on an equal if not worse level to transgender discrimination Both need to be tackled, though
I think the prejudice against and the dehumanisation of drug users is on an equal if not worse level to transgender discrimination Both need to be tackled, though
~420 blaze it~
I think the prejudice against and the dehumanisation of drug users is on an equal if not worse level to transgender discrimination Both need to be tackled, though
I wouldn't be too sure of that. With drug use, you at least have a choice to lead that kind of lifestyle, trans people are trans whether they want to be or not.
~420 blaze it~
he has a point. I seriously doubt he's talking about casual weed smokers, more like people addicted to hard drugs that can't escape the downward spiral and can't get help for fear of being arrested and other shit. that said, it's not fair to use the existence of one to minimise the other. transgender people really do seem to get the ass end of the shit stick when it comes to GSM oppression. more likely to be killed for being trans*, much more likely to try to commit suicide as well, and that's not counting the other bullshit in their lives they have to put up with daily

If so I'm fucked, I'm Glaswegian.
I think the prejudice against and the dehumanisation of drug users is on an equal if not worse level to transgender discrimination Both need to be tackled, though
Doing drugs is a choice. LGBT is not.
I think the prejudice against and the dehumanisation of drug users is on an equal if not worse level to transgender discrimination Both need to be tackled, though
Officer, i was born to blaze it, you faggot.
Are you trying to say that theres a genetic base for Heroin addiction? If so I'm fucked, I'm Glaswegian.
Glasgow might just be the only place where that sort of shit is possible.
its suprising how many gay people hate transfolk
Jesus fuck, for real? Excuse my lack of knowledge but that's just horrible. How can anybody excuse "my kind of abnormality is okay but yours is not"?
Biden is very good at appealing to college students.
i think trans people definitely get the worst of it, followed by gays/lesbians and then bisexuals.
I think the thing is that from outside point of view, they most-to-least apparent, in that specific order. I am bisexual and I have simply zero problems with it, because nobody who I suspect to cause me problems due to it knows about it. It's not that easy to conceal you are transgender. [editline]1st November 2012[/editline] Thing is that if people have no longer a problem with transgender people, it's likely they will realize there's no problem with "just" gay or bisexual people either, because for somebody looking on the issue from inside, they are just partial/milder case of the same.
Glasgow might just be the only place where that sort of shit is possible.
Shit I think I feel the craving coming on just now man, fuck, I guess I'll be seeing my friends in the great opium den in the sky.
I think the prejudice against and the dehumanisation of drug users is on an equal if not worse level to transgender discrimination Both need to be tackled, though
no not really
