BBC: Sharia Councils in the UK pressuring women to stay in abusive relationships

BBC Panorama has uncovered fresh evidence of how some Sharia councils in Britain may be putting Muslim women "at risk" by pressuring them to stay in abusive marriages.
In a small terraced house in east London, a woman and her husband argue before an Islamic scholar who sits on a dais above them in a room that looks and feels like a court.
This is Leyton Islamic Sharia Council, and Dr Suhaib Hasan will decide if the woman can have a divorce. Her husband is refusing to grant her one and the couple have been coming here for a year.
With an Islamic marriage, it is far easier for a man to divorce. The only way for women is through these councils.
"We are not here just to issue divorces," says Dr Hasan.
"We want to mediate first. We try to save marriages so when people come to us we try to reconcile them."
But Islamic rulings given here are not always in the interests of the women concerned, and can run counter to British law.

this makes me want to vomit
Assholes. Fuck Sharia Law
Sharia law can fuck right off, why is it even allowed?
How the fuck this is even allowed is beyond me.
Mm I thought Sharia councils were not allowed?

Ah okay;
The Islamic Sharia Council is a London-based, quasi-Islamic court that provides legal rulings and advice to Muslims in accordance with Islamic Sharia based on the four Sunni schools of thought. It primarily handles cases of marriage and divorce and, to a lesser extent business and finance.[1] According to BBC News, thousands of Muslims have turned to the Council to resolve family and financial issues. According to the Council, it deals with 200-300 cases monthly.[2]
The council has no legal authority or jurisdiction in the United Kingdom,[1] and can not impose any penalties. Muslims voluntarily accept the rulings it makes.[2]
Ah okay;
They have no legal authority but breaking their rules risks being ostracised from the community or worse.
There is no mediating an abusive relationship, just leave.
Unfortunately some idiots and their entire immigrant families believe that the UK is under Sharia Law. If you leave there is a possibility of being murdered for "shaming" them. It's happened before.
Any religion that wants you to do to this is fucking disgraceful
I think Muslim women are in the wrong faith.

Faith isn't bad, believing every word a book tells you is. In general I find that Muslims take the Quran a lot more seriously than Christians the Bible. I don't have a problem with that, but I think it can turn out bad in many cases.
gj guys what the fuck did you think would happen if shit like sharia councils were introduced?

Just a bit of relevant info; the Qur'an is the direct (and "perfect") word of Allah given to the prophet Muhammed by the Angel Jibril - the New Testament of the Bible is a collection of stories and teachings by Jesus but written by other people, in Islam the Hadiths would be a similar comparison.
Because the Qur'an is considered the direct word of god, Muslims should maintain complete faith in everything it says - hence why they generally take it more seriously.

It more depends on where they come from, for example islam is more lax in Turkey (where i'm from) or Kazakhstan unlike Iran or Pakistan where this whole secular thing hasn't really caught on, where religion is still so entwined with government much like Europe used to be hundreds of years ago

But it's still open to interpretation.
Sharia law can fuck right off, why is it even allowed?
It's not a legal thing; they can't force anybody to do anything, but when they wave their religion over their heads, they can coerce them into decisions they don't want to make.
Is this where I say "stay classy England" and act cool generalizing and entire region based on the actions of a select few individuals?
Sharia Law should be illegal already.
Sharia Law should be illegal already.
Well it is voluntary and holds no legal grounds so I'm not entirely sure what you'll be outlawing. Jewish communities have been practising their version of sharia law in the UK for centuries.
helo i yam britman and i beleev in shakira law
it is gud yu r al ronng

and that should be abolish too.

I don't see how being a Muslim makes you not British. If you're extreme about it, sure, but I don't see anything wrong with being a certain faith in a country where there's freedom of religion.
and that should be abolish too.
Why? You'd be abolishing the voluntary practice of their religion. Abolishing a religious advice-type thing would not affect anything.
Sharia Law should be illegal already.
The best thing that could be done is for the police and local authorities to pretty much ignore any cultural differences or sensitivities and treat this as domestic abuse, exactly as it applies to everyone else in the country - hopefully it will encourage more people to come forward
and that should be abolish too.
Why? It's basically a place you can go to get advice from a certain perspective. It might be pretty shitty advice, but that's all it is.
and that should be abolish too.
But there's nothing to abolish, it has no legal standing, it's just a religious thing
In fact the Islamic Sharia Council's website explains it pretty well:
As the Muslims normally conduct their marriages both Islamically (known as Nikah ceremony which is conducted by an Imam at any mosque or Islamic Center), and by registering with the civil authorities, this council deals only with the Islamic Nikah. It has nothing to do with the civil marriages which are dissolved by the British Courts and not by the Council. The Council does not intervene in civil marriage contracts.
