What is Christmas?
Christmas or Christmas Day is an annual holiday generally celebrated on December 25 by billions of people around the world. The holiday was first sanctioned by the Roman state Church in the early-to-mid 4th century to commemorate the the birth of Jesus Christ, and remains one of the central feasts in the Christian liturgical year. The exact birthday of Jesus is not known, and the date for Christmas is thought to have been selected to coincide with either the date of the Roman winter solstice, one of various ancient winter festivals, or the day exactly nine months after Jesus’ traditional conception date.
(Shamelessly stolen from Wikipedia)
Why have a thread about this?
Being one of the largest holidays of the year, it's nice to discuss what people are doing. Doing something unique with your family? Trying to get gift ideas?
Scared of the snow? Worried that a yeti is going to come and eat all your christmas cookies? Well, this is the place to talk about it.
Ahhh! I need some gifts!!!! WHAT DO?!?!
Alright, Alright. Calm down. There's a lot of nice resources you can use.

So, I understand Christmas is based around Jesus' birthday but what's the commercial holiday about?
In the medieval ages, it was a large drunken celebration but eventually evolved into the gift-giving celebration we have today. It takes elements from the celebration of Saturnalia and Yule.
Over time, it's devolved into a family-oriented holiday that we know and love.
So explain it in layman's terms
Christmas is based around Santa Claus, a large jolly man with a white beard who lives at the North Pole. It's said he works in a workshop of elves making toys for good kids all year round,
and that he gives coal to the kids that are bad. During this season, people buy gifts for each other and wrap them. The gifts are not allowed to be open until Christmas. People put up
"Christmas Trees" in their house, although most are artificial now. These trees are decorated with fancy ornaments and tinsel and lights to look beautiful. Once it's close enough to Christmas,
all the presents are placed under the tree (Except for Santa's, of course) and they remain wrapped until Christmas.
So what does this mean for me?
Depending on your group of friends, you may need to buy Christmas gifts for your friends as it's a long-standing tradition to buy Christmas gifts for people. You should
also buy gifts for your family. It's a season of giving rather than receiving, and it's centered around spending time with your family.
Anything I else to know?
There's some common traditions with holidays that I will summarive.
1. Gifts remain wrapped until Christmas. Some families choose to open one gift on Christmas Eve, because most kids are incapable of patience.
2. Santa loves cookies and milk, so kids put out cookies and milk for santa and in the morning, the cookies are half eaten and the milk is gone.
3. Decorating your house in addition to your tree is common. People love to put lights up on their house to make it look festive. Some people go crazy with Christmas decorations,
and there are competitions and the like for best decorated house.
4. Egg Nog goes on sale, which is the finest drink of all time, so you should buy some. I mean it. Do it.

If Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin won't get you in the Christmas Cheer, I don't know what will.
The coke advert's been on, that's enough to get most people in the festive cheer.
