I saw a crow in a parking lot once doing something similar. He had a piece of old, hard, dry bread, and was sitting near a puddle continually dipping the bread and tasting it until it was soft enough to eat.
Wow that's pretty impressive! Reminds me of this article talking about seagulls and their adaptive feeding behaviors like using man-made food(such as bread) and worms to fish, and dropping oysters unto streets to be cracked open under vehicle tires.
This is actually a case of evolution in action.

I would say this is adaption, not evolution. This is the bird learning a new technique, but there is no change in the species genetics to do so.

Actually birds are the 2nd most intelligent animals above sea-level.

Evolution just refers to genetic change within a population. Most of the time it is actually pretty boring stuff.

Not really, people at one point had to learn that, and if needed people would learn it again, but now we don't really have to figure anything out on our own because we, as a species, have found out a lot of things and pass it down the generations to make life easier for everyone else.

I heard a story from my bio teacher about a bear that learned to fall on cars in order to break them open and get food from inside, and it managed to teach it to it's young. Really awesome adaptations in nature.
I love these birds! They've got such a cat-like hunting attitude to them. I use to have one watch me in Arizona when I went fishing, and it ended up picking up bugs around the shoreline of the water, and would dip them in the water to attract fish.

A town near by me has a serious bear problem, and one of the bears actually managed to terrify a woman by knocking on her door...
These birds are fucking smart. I've seen them down by a canal in a local park. They'll wait for people to feed the fish and they'll swoop in and leave with ~5 fish at a time. They're definitely learning.
