• Recommend me a new AM3 CPU (under $200)

Okay, so here's what I've currently got: AMD Athlon II X4 640 Radeon HD6870 4GB RAM A month or so ago I got the 6870 and decided to wait until after Christmas to upgrade the RAM and the CPU. I'll be getting 8GB RAM but I haven't decided on a new CPU yet. So what would be the best CPU I can get for under $200? I'll probably overclock it. Any help and experience with whatever you recommend would be nice.
phenom II x4 955
phenom II x4 955
Thats fairly old and is not much of a upgrade from a Athlon II X4 , I'd so go for a Phenom II 1100T or a 1075T, whichever is cheaper. Alternatively wait for Bulldozers successor.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103894 Black Edition CPUs usually overclock better. I was looking for the AMD 955 BE but they don't have stock. I use an AMD Phenom II x4 965 myself.
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/CPU/341
Any other games, you know.. games that actually stress the CPU and have proper multithreading? I know of ArmA2 and Battlefield 3. [editline]24th December 2011[/editline] Even then, the difference is minute and I think you should go for the 1100T, as you can easily overclock it and its semi-future proofed against multithreaded applications.

And because the 1100T is so futureproof? If you want futureproof you shouldn't be buying an AMD processor right now. Name one game in which multithreading is actually properly used.
BF3 has pretty shitty multithreading then. FPS was pretty similar with i7 2600k, i5 2500k and i3 2100. Its better suited for multithreaded applications and more games etc are taking better advantage of them today. Out of just how many games ever released? How many games in the next year or two are going to support threading?
Yes, two games. Out of just how many games ever released? How many games in the next year or two are going to support threading?
2012, alot.
2012, alot.
Plenty that support 2 cores, sure. Guess how many cores the X4 has?
Plenty that support 2 cores, sure. Guess how many cores the X4 has?
What are you even trying to say.
What he's trying to say is that there aren't alot of games right now to make use of one or two or even 4 cores right now so buying a 6 core is pointless.
meh, OP save for a 2500K and a new motherboard.
Yeah, I don't want to get a new mobo just yet since this one is barely a year old. I'll just stick with the one I have for now. As for the suggestions, it looks like I'll probably get the 965. Thanks for the help.
meh, OP save for a 2500K and a new motherboard.
Just shut the fuck up if you're not even going to help. [editline]24th December 2011[/editline] OP, Get a 955 or 965 Black edition if you find one.
