LOS ANGELES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (KABC) -- An American Airlines flight from Los Angeles International Airport to London was delayed Sunday after concerns over the name of a WiFi hotspot.
A passenger saw the WiFi connection, named "Al-Quida Free Terror Nettwork," and expressed concern to a flight attendant.
The plane was held at a remote part of the airport for three hours and passengers were told to turn off their electronic devices. Passengers said they were initially told that it was a maintenance issue.
"After an hour, (the captain) said there was a security threat and that we didn't have clearance to take off," said passenger Elliot Del Pra.
Flight 136 was eventually taken back to the gate and was delayed until 1 p.m. Monday, American Airlines officials said.
"After further investigation, it was determined that no crime was committed and no further action will be taken," the airport said in a statement to Eyewitness News on Monday.
Not sure if it meant "There are no Al-Quaeda members on this network" or "This network is free to all Al-Quaeda members."
It could have meant "come get terror from us for no cost whatsoever except your peace of mind and/or life"
Must have been somebody foreign, because they couldn't spell the wifi network name correctly.
That spelling just makes me [sic].
They'd flip if they saw my laptop's network labelled 'Virus Attack Stress Test Server'
There should be a ban in threads like this about posting your network name. Seriously. It's as bad as the speedtest shit on connectivity threads.

Except there hasn't been any of this in this particular thread with the exception of one post?

Once one goes, more follow, just like in threads about kids getting in trouble/suspended for stupid reasons, causing others to talk about their own stupid things they got away with.

People talking about personal relevant things to a thread? Well i'd never!
Or we can bitch about things.
no security key for the finishing touches :P
It's kinda' terrifying to think that I could ground a plane just with my cell phone by doing something like this.

Name it 'Bomb Detonator' :v:
Set your SSID to "15D HAS A BOMB".
Wouldn't be surprised if someone was using a Wi-Fi Pineapple for this, either as just this prank, or for being a wifi sniffer.

That'd be clever if one were to attempt a MitM attack on a plane, but a true Pineapple owner would want to keep a low profile.

Considering Wifi Pineapple is used by professional penetration testers, I would hope airlines have done penetration tests. If not, its rather scary (yet still useful), if their wifi was proven insecure by a whitehat individual.
There's someone in my apartment block who has a WiFi network "ASIO Surveillance Van 001". Them and this person would get along. They could complement each other.
imagine missing an interview or losing a day of your vacation or just missing your connecting flight somewhere after you've already been in transit for 12 hours just because this one confused tit on your plane can't tell a joke from his asshole
Yep, it was only a matter of time something like this would happen considering nowadays anyone with a smartphone can make a wifi hotspot of their choosing.
wow way to be that guy that had to delay the flight because of something stupid
(i'm assuming it was someone who turned on their phone's hotspot)
Everything is a threat now, so easy to create terror even with my phone.

Shut up, nobody beats my brilliant wifi name. TeliaGatewayC9-97-26-98-97-43. Pretty fuckin' clever, eh? Bet ain't no plane from miles around taking off with a name that edgy.

One person I was sitting next too almost missed her scheduled transplan because of a delay, My father actually got out of his seat and fixed the airplane because of it :v:
Actually made it into the New York times or something
She would of had to wait a long time because of how the system works if she missed it, so you can kill people in some cases.
Wow, the name of a wireless network. Just a name. Of a network anyone could have setup.
Someone so dense as to call attention to that as a threat would cause the plane to exceed its max take off weight so maybe this saved a lot of lives
I do this all the time when I turn my smartphone in a WiFi hotspot. NSA service van #4 and Virus Distribution Center are just a few names I like to use.
"nettwork"
also,
it's never a good idea to play counter-strike on a plane
*beep beep beep beep*, "bomb has been planted"
I remember my last flight. The onboard Wi-Fi is behind a paywall so I named my own hotspot "Request butter for free Wi-Fi". I felt bad after I saw a confused flight attendant walk past to ask another attendant about the "offer" some flyers kept asking about.
I'm so doing this next time I fly.
