BERLIN (AP) — Otto von Habsburg saw the crumbling of the empire his family had ruled for centuries and emerged from its ashes as a champion of a united and democratic Europe.
The oldest son of Austria-Hungary's last emperor fought Nazism and Soviet communism during his long decades of exile from his homeland, and was lionized by leaders across the continent as "a great European."
I blame the serbs.
I'm going to be in Vienna a few days after he is entombed in the Imperial Crypt. Hopefully I will be able to see him and the crypt won't be too crowded.
It's weird that Otto von Habsburg could have taken the Spanish throne offered by Franco. Ironic considering the War of Spanish Succession.

Goodnight, sweet Crown prince.
In all seriousness, this news has me feeling slightly down. Austria-Hungary is one of my favorite now dissolved Empires, and now all real connection we had to it has been severed.
