.io domains - Hardware & Software

I guess this is the right place. I am not wrong in saying almost every fucking illegal download and streaming site is using a .io domain now. I am guessing this is to avoid copyright laws? Am I correct? How exactly are they preventing the law biting them on the arse and are they completely free to go against copyright while using a .io domain? What reason? Surely if you are the person who uploads and creates the site, no matter where it is hosted it is still illegal? Are United Kingdom broadbands eligible to block these sites from us because of the law barrier?

A domain name has no bearing on copyright law in the slightest, it's just a string tying an IP to a human readable string. They're likely using alternative TLDs because their past .com domains have since been shut down or seized by authorities looking to take down illegal content. Why .io specifically? Dunno. It's a fairly popular new TLD that isn't .com, .net or .org, I suppose.

I don't think .io domains are particularly dominant in illegal download sites? Either way, domain names merely point to the IP of a server, they aren't grounds for copyright infringements in itself (except for domain theft etc). That being said, several domains for ThePirateBay for example have been shut down through a court order issued by Sweden. The British Indian Ocean Territory probably does not have the resources to do the same though (and it's not really worth the effort most of the time).

I haven't noticed it. thepiratebay is back to using .org, kickass torrents is using .cr, nyaa.se is still .se. in fact, I can't think of a single piracy site using a .io tld

because io is more available since it's significantly more expensive
