saddest part of all this?
His biggest regret is that his parents didn’t live to see his release.“[They] passed without ever knowing the truth. That’s hard,” he said. “There was always doubt. I wish they could be here for this moment.”
we'll I am sad now but happy he got out
Must be nice to finally be out and be able to explore the world, but nothing and nobody can ever give him those years back.
His false conviction was not only a failure of the justice system of the united states but of humanity in general. This kind of thing should never be allowed to happen.
Just to think that on this very moment, Maybe even hundreds of people are in jail while being innocent
how does a man having reached his age inside become accustomed to the outside world
he was 18 when he was imprisoned and he's probably pretty damn lost
I can't imagine being in jail for allegedly raping and murdering a little girl when you know you didn't do it. I'd feel like everyone was going to kill me or not care if I was being assaulted because I was a child molester and murder. I hear they have it the worst inside. I feel truly bad for this guy.
“Let me tell you, the rape and murder of an 8-year-old girl is not the ideal thing to be in prison for,” he said... Bryant said he was jumped numerous times while in prison, and was once almost fatally stabbed.
It's extremely heartbreaking

Honestly, there are probably more than just hundreds
Can he sue for compensation? I want to see him with millions in his pocket right now.
Honestly, there are probably more than just hundreds
even if there was only a 1% false conviction rate, that would leave like 2500 innocent people incarcerated in the united states alone.
[editline]13th April 2013[/editline]
some people estimate the actual rate is 4-6% though.
His life was literally taken away from him, holy shit.
I am sad and happy at the same time.
imagine being released and discovering smartphones, the internet, how much the world has moved on.
fucking hell, imagine seeing a flat screen telly in the flesh for the first time.

Could be higher than that. A lot of cases seem haphazard and rushed, because some parts of the justice system seem more interested in maintaining their reputation by putting anyone they can pin to the crime away instead of trying to find the actual perpetrators.
Of course, it's probably not that common though....I hope.

not to mention most crimes are not solved by trial but by plea bargain where the prosecution and public pretender coerces defendants into pleading guilty with the promise of reduced sentence for compliance and heavy retribution for non-compliance.
I am surprised he survived 38 years in jail. Or do your inmates not know why you are in prison unless you tell them?
It's extremely heartbreaking
man. and to think there's dudes who believe the system is fine as it is - shit's busted six ways from sunday
That is bad, the prime of his life taken away from him. He's an institutionalised man now.
38 years of his life, if he were to work minimum wage with the average amount of working time for employees of minimum wage, he would have about $2,888,000. (this is on minimum wage of $7.25 and not including taxes) Most people do not stay on minimum wage for their entire life and he could have very well go on to make much much more.
[editline]13th April 2013[/editline]
Not to mention that even with being proven innocent, accusations stick, as well as even having gone to jail. They have essentially ruined his life.

which he better get more than $3 Mill then 38 FUCKING YEARS for something he did not do and was most likely treated much more shitty than the rest of the inmates
this is why capital punishment is bad guys
i'll go now

Look at the after picture, you can tell he had the shit kicked out of him on the regular.

hell if i was in his shoes i'd probably be filled with hate to this day. i'd be out for blood (metaphorically.)
it's incredibly sad that just by looking at the title you can guess that the man is black.
just further evidence of the incredible racial bias in the american justice system, and how prevalent structural racism still is.
This reminds me of Shawshank Redemption. Hope he gets Reds Ending instead of Brooks

if you read a headline and think "black guy" then you shouldn't call other people racists
if you read a headline and think "black guy" then you shouldn't call other people racists
you're joking, right?
the overwhelming majority of innocent people that are locked up for more than ten years for rape and murder happen to be black men, and this was further evidence of that pattern
recognizing racism doesn't make you racist, and if you think it does, you're stupid.
if you read a headline and think "black guy" then you shouldn't call other people racists
Yeah, when you hear about unfairly judged crimes in America with a white girl victim no one has any historical reason to believe it was a black male that got the short end of the shit stick, no sir.
If I'm ever sent that MUCH time to prison, I would try my best to escape. I mean, I prefer to die trying to escape than to rot the rest of my days in a cell.

Give him 50 mil, teach him Zen, send him to LA and make him a detective.
