Barbados to Remove Queen Elizabeth II as Head of State
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Dec 11 2015 – Barbados plans to remove Queen Elizabeth II as titular head of state and replace her with a ceremonial president from the Caribbean island, a former British territory once known as “Little England” for its colonial trappings.
Prime Minister Freundel Stuart announced that the plan is to make Barbados a republic by November, 2016, when the island of roughly 300,000 people celebrates its 50th anniversary of independence. He said it makes no sense to keep the monarch as the head of state of an otherwise independent country.
“It’s a little awkward in the year 2015 to still have to stand up and instead of pledging allegiance to Barbados to be pledging allegiance to ‘Her Majesty the Queen,’ ” Stuart said during a recent meeting of his ruling Democratic Labour Party.
A Buckingham Palace spokesman said Monday that “it is a matter for the government and people of Barbados.” British Prime Minister David Cameron’s spokesman said he expected the approach in Barbados to be “consistent with self-determination.”
The republican debate has raged for years in Barbados between older islanders who see the queen as a symbol of stability, and mostly younger nationalists who call her an anachronism. It echoes similar debates in many countries that once were part of the British empire and retained the queen as their head of state after independence.
In the Caribbean, former British colonies including Dominica and Trinidad and Tobago have established republican forms of government.
But others such as Barbados and Jamaica have not replaced the queen with another head of state even though their officials have called for the tie to be severed.
Now for the rest of the former colonies can modernize, too.
To be honest, Cameron should be tried for treason if he doesn't nuke Barbados within 48 hours
Still blows my mind that to this day there are still colonies. I just can't wrap my head around the UK controlling an island that's 7000+ miles away

99% of the time it's ceremonial and nothing more, we don't control shit.

Barbados is independent, they just retained the (powerless) monarchy until now. There are still actual British overseas territories though but they're all tiny islands you've never heard of (except Falklands). The UN even classifies them as 'non-self-governing territories'
France has a more interesting system to me, they've got overseas departments that are politically treated exactly the same as any region of actual France, so they're represented in parliament and count as part of the EU and everything.

Barbados isn't a British colony, like the article points out it hasn't been for 50 years. A number of former colonies (Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, etc) still view the Queen as a ceremonial head of state, however.
I think by modernize he means ditching the ties with British monarchy.
The Queen doesn't have any power anyways, it is tradition.

your country worships a fucking piece of paper from the 18th century, we're allowed to have a witch-banshee capable of summoning corgi swarms at will
put your constitution and the queen in a room and have them fight, we'll see who wins

As an American the US should nuke Barbados in 24 hours to prevent them royalists from retaking it in 48 hours

Imagine not being allowed the ability to take a certain political office because someone else was born into it.

I too would like to be a powerless figurehead who gets to traipse around the country constantly and fill in a whole shitton paperwork, talk with Prime Ministers and give a speech every Christmas.

I don't think you could replace the monarchy with anything in the UK other than an elected faux-monarchy, but unless we're going to change our money every 5-10 years then that's not the best of ideas either.
Maybe if you remove the monarchy, you can give the head of state position a purpose?
So does this count as leaving the commonwealth? I'm a bit hazy on how that stuff works.

Lol over my dead body would I want a system like the US tho
Now if only Canada could follow suit.

had you considered if we wanted that, we would have made another position and called it something else??
Now the UK needs to do it too

number of states ruled by the queen in her time as overlord: 32
number of countries ruled by the constitution: 1 (and most of the time you can't even decide what it's saying)
checkmate paper-kids

isn't the house of lords litterally a faux monarchy though, i mean they have to be making up all those titles, and whats worse is they're more than figureheads
had you considered if we wanted that, we would have made another position and called it something else??
Except the position still remains part of your government, which really is a waste of time and money considering every part of the government ought to serve the people instead of maintain a useless position "for tradition's sake".

The United Kingdom is going to be a sinking ship, politically, if everyone honestly sees the only possible other version for a republic is the US system.
If you don't like the US system, try another republican system. They're not cookie-cutter and all uniform in organization.
