NZ briefed on secret US action coming in Asia-Pacific
The United States government has given a top-level briefing to Minister of Foreign Affairs Winston Peters about an impending action in the Asia-Pacific.
It is believed Mr Peters will at some point be taken into North Korea by the West as a sort of liaison. He's been there before, and he may yet go there again at the request of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and the United States.
United States Secretary of State Rex Tillerson briefed Mr Peters in Manila at the East Asia summit, at the same time as Donald Trump sent a tweet that a "major statement" was coming.
It was his second meeting with Mr Tillerson in the last week.
"Tillerson called, and he wants New Zealand to be engaged in something, and you will learn more in the next few days," said Mr Peters.
Mr Peters has told Ms Ardern of the action, but both declined to comment on whether it was linked to Mr Trump's Twitter post.
The latter commented that "one would be unwise to predict the nature of any of the President's tweets".
Mr Peters told reporters the issue has to do with the Asia-Pacific region, but he wouldn't mention what it is before he and Ms Ardern have been fully briefed.
"He asked me to have a meeting, but I can't tell you about the details of it," he said.
Trump is actually crazy enough to start a war for no other reason than to distract the public from his own treason.
Fucking incredible.

not much of a secret now
I wonder if this is why 3 supercarriers arrived near NK.
I'm interested as hell to see how this evolves, mildy spooky and weird as hell if Winston goes through with it.

Well, it's not like we know for sure what the action is going to be.
I've heard this might be Trump putting North Korea on the State Sponsors of Terrorism list.

Trump to make 'major' announcement on North Korea, trade deals after Asia trip
President Trump says he will make a "major" announcement on North Korea and the outcome of his week-long trade negotiations across East Asia when he returns to Washington later this week.
"It will be a very complete statement as to trade, as to North Korea as to a lot of other things," Trump said at a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Earlier in the week, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Trump would announce at the "end of the trip" his decision on whether or not to officially re-list North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism.

Pass acts of sedition and force people and journalists who ask into prison
Bit of history.
Foreign Minister Winston Peters is one of only a handful of Western leaders to have visited the insular dictatorship of North Korea.
Newshub believes he will be sent to North Korea again, this time as a liaison for the West.
In 2007, he attempted to strike a deal with North Korea in which it would dismantle its nuclear arms in return for economic development aid. The attempt was unsuccessful.
This time as Foreign Minister, he wants to do better.
In his first press conference after the coalition Government was announced, he said he doesn't believe North Korea is "an utterly hopeless case" and said New Zealand needs more understanding of the region.
Historically, Mr Peters has favoured a careful - and peaceful - approach to North Korea.
Mr Peters re-established a tentative relationship with North Korea in 2007, a year after ties were cut following a 2006 nuclear weapons test.
elations between New Zealand and North Korea have barely existed since the Korean War of the 1950s. During the war, troops from New Zealand were sent to fight for the United Nations' force against North Korea.
Then in 2006, after North Korea tested a nuclear weapon, New Zealand withdrew what little contact there had been.
Mr Peters re-established that relationship in 2007. He visited the country to discuss coming to an economic deal with North Korea if it were to shut down its nuclear weapons.
North Korea held onto those nuclear arms but the talks resulted in an unexpected win for a New Zealand migratory bird.
"We did, funnily enough, get some success and ensured that 97,000 birds that transit North Korea to New Zealand - to Miranda - continue to get safe harbour because of those efforts," Mr Peters told media in October.
"It was an unusual outcome, but maybe we can shoot higher this time and might possibly be successful."
put a silent running sub with a nuclear torpedo right under that thing and you've destroyed most of the US naval power in the region, or at least crippled it.
thats why you don't put everything in one freeking fleet.

We have 7 more of those supercarriers, that's not even close to the US fleet.
What you dont see are the numerous subs traveling with the fleet to prevent just that...
And the patrol craft. And the sonar. And sonobuoys. And on. And on. And on.

Also I imagine that, given the range of modern weapons, operational formations wouldn't be anywhere near as tight

And you're assuming that not only do those carriers not have anti-sub equipment and also that the US doesn't also have nuclear subs nearby those things at all times?
Not to mention that's only a fraction of the fleet and would immediately cause the perpetrator country to be at war with the US. A significant attack like that - especially a nuclear fucking weapon being used since WW2 - would essentially start WW3 on the spot.

Also, there are only so many countries with nuclear-armed subs. If you're presuming NK would do something like that, you're have no clue what you're talking about.

"Damn! Fuck! Pull it all out! We absolutely NEVER thought of this!" Says SECNAV after seeing sheer tactical brilliance appear in a gayrys mod forum post, lamenting that the entire US Fleet completely forgoes any type of anti-submarine duties, to his surprise.
If you hear a knock at your door it may just be a new job offer from the Department of the Navy my guy.
Thanks in advance for your service o7 what a post

There are safeguards in place to prevent such a thing, such as patrolling subs and surveillance.
Not to mention this would very likely trigger an immediate nuclear response if someone was stupid enough to do that.

Pretty sure the normal spacing between vessels is so far that they're under the horizon from each other.

I think they generally stay pretty close (not as close as in that picture though) to the aircraft carrier so that the fleet can use each ships defensive weapons as a network running off each others radars. But between subs, radar, and aircraft recon the visibility of the fleet is thousands of miles. They don't need to be spread apart. I'm sure we got some navy dudes here that can chime in more accurately, though.
