Syria signs Paris Agreement - leaving US only country in the world to refuse climate change deal
Syria has become a signatory of the Paris climate agreement, leaving the US as the only country in the world not to support the framework deal to combat greenhouse gas emissions.
When President Donald Trump announced he intended to pull the US out of the agreement, it initially meant America would join Nicaragua and Syria on a small list of countries who were not part of the deal.
The war-torn Middle East nation made the announcement in Bonn, Germany at the COP 23 UN climate summit. Syria is facing the sixth year of a brutal civil conflict, which started with rebel groups fighting the government of President Bashar al-Assad and expanded to include a battle against Isis.
The Paris accord was signed by nearly 200 countries in December 2015 in an effort to curb global greenhouse gas emissions and limit global warming to within 2 degrees Celsius.
Until recently Nicaragua was also a holdout nation, but only because the Central American country felt the agreement did not go far enough in putting limits on emissions and helping poorer countries adapt to an already-changed planet with solid financial commitments by wealthier nations.
Scientists had confirmed the emissions levels agreed upon by top polluters like the US, EU, China, and India were not low enough to keep sea levels from rising and global warming under 2 degrees Celsius, let alone the recommended and more ambitious goal of 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2100.
It's great that Syria signed it but I sincerely doubt they are capable of doing anything with it right now.

It's pretty sad that nation that could do a lot about it is refusing to do so based on the whims and idiocy of one man, however.
(And yes, I'm aware individual states in the United States can and will do something. But how many won't unless forced by the federal government?)
Not even Israel is joining its butt buddy on this one. You'd think that'd be a message but oil money is louder.
I can't wait for next year's hurricane season to be just as brutal as this year's. Maybe back to back catastrophic natural disasters will change a few minds.
What am I saying, nothing's changing until El Manos Diminutas is booted out.

They can promise a decrease in the usage of diesel-fueled tanks and helicopters?
Mostly, I think this is just meant as a fuck-you to the United States.

In the middle of a war?
I can't tell if you're being sarcastic :v:

I'm sure they can strike a deal with Ol' Musky to electrify their T-72s before spring 2018.
Even North Korea joined as well
the sad part is, realistically Trump very well might not get re-elected or even stand for a second term and after being voted out of the WH but before it changes hands he will formally withdraw us from the treaty just as a fuck you to his successor
The day US became isolated in their stupidity.

I didn't ask for this
Send help

Nah. It's coal money. What's doubly frustrating is that we could easily meet the targets presented here simply by phasing coal and natural gas out for nuclear plants over 5-10 years. We don't even have to concern ourselves with auto emissions to do it, it's doable solely by phasing fossil fuels out of our electrical supply. But between the ridiculously powerful coal lobby and the ridiculously powerful anti-nuclear lobby we're getting nowhere fast.
I bet you if the nuclear power industry waved a larger check than the coal industry currently waves at Trump he'd start praising Atom practically overnight.
Tyranny of the minority in action

If it wasn't for the tracks on a tank being really loud, a electric tank would be a ideal mental warfare weapon to use in the middle of the night.
Can't see it conventionally, and probably doesn't have a significant heat signature either.

More like tyranny of the rich and powerful

The rest of the world has rich people too. This is simply the cunty republicans.
The said thing about this is the stupid people who voted our current administration into power will see this as more "evidence" of the USA being "the best country in the world."

To be fair, Syria probably will meet the Paris agreement goals. Having basically 0 functioning industry does wonders for your carbon footprint. Also since most of the demo work is done for them, renovation costs might be cheaper?
It's sad that a country that's basically been completely destroyed by civil war is more on track toward a brighter tomorrow than the "leader of the free world".

Well, when you hit your lowest point there is only one way to go- up!

It's only temporary. It probably won't even last another 3 years but if it does, it's only 3 years

the fact that it was allowed to happen in the first place implies deeper problems
The definition of American exceptionalism. I mean, who cares if what America is doing is objectively wrong? America is #1; America is the best! America is always right!
It's one thing to love your country, but it's another to think that your country is automatically superior to all others. Americans need to drop those attitudes, which will in turn see America no longer elect candidates such as Donald Trump.
This is embarrassing and appalling.

We won't be #1 when the rest of the world is relying on new technology and we're sitting here with industrial age tech wondering what went wrong. We could have been a world supplier of green energy technologies, instead the world will be supplying us.

Don't underestimate stupidity, it could last 5-8 years, or even more if this country is truly 100% fucked.

its the thought that counts

Actually, the track noise doesn't do all that much to give them away. M1A1s got the nickname 'Whispering Death' during Desert Storm because their gas turbine engines were so fucking quiet relative to the diesel engines of other tanks that the Iraqi troops that were supposed to repel them never knew they were coming until their own tanks started exploding. You can hear a Leo 2 or Challenger 2 from miles away, their V12, 1,000HP diesel engines have very distinct, very loud, and instantly recognizable engine notes that even someone who's never seen or heard a tank before would be able to correctly identify as a tank...Abrams can sneak right up on you, you won't hear it till it's just a couple hundred yards away.

It just sounds like a semi truck when it's approaching. I've genuinely heard Peterbilts that made more noise than that, and the same sort of noise to boot. I live about a mile from I40 as the crow flies, I'm out in the sticks. Some nights, if I go out into my driveway, I can on occasion hear one roaring up one of the hills out on the freeway, and I can almost always hear their tire noise, their jake brakes if they're using them. If I heard an Abrams haul ass past my house one night like that video shows I'd probably assume it to be another trucker that took a wrong turn, whereas if any other MBT came past my house at that sort of clip I'd peg it for a tank immediately.
An electric tank would be no different in that regard, especially if it used rubber track pads like the Abrams does. You could run one down the highway at 45-50 miles per hour through the dead of night and it would be drowned out almost entirely by the diesel engines of the wheeled support vehicles that were in the convoy. If it lacked those, unless someone got eyes directly on it, they'd think it was just another lorry, wouldn't give it a second thought.
