I still think the Surface Pro line is a solid offering in the compact PC space, and the newer chips from Intel seem tailor made to fill the needs of a new generation surface lineup (addressing battery concerns mainly). If I had the spending money or needed a portable computer, I'd likely end up getting a pro. The idea of running a full copy of photoshop with a stylus input on a portable, high resolution device is just too enticing to pass up.
i want a normal laptop made by microsoft

I actually tried the touch cover - it's actually quite workable.
But yeah, a Surface style laptop would be very nice indeed.
What would a surface style laptop look like? a regular laptop?

Knowing Microsoft, they'd throw usability and expandability out of the windows and go Macbook air wannabe.
I waited half a year for the surface pro to be released in sweden, it never came so eventually I got a yoga.

have you spent more than 3 minutes using either windows 8 or a macbook?
They should replace the ARM Surface with one of the newer Atom processors, and update the Pro with a Haswell i5 w/ HD5000 graphics.
have you spent more than 3 minutes using either windows 8 or a macbook?
Yes, and I regretted both accounts.
The Air is severely gimped in expansion ports & serviceability, and windows 8 is taking a good kernel and pairing it with a shitty user interface.

The MacBook Air is great, but they're overpriced and not for everybody.
Windows 8 on a desktop/traditional laptop is terrible. Some of the new features are cool, but the tile/desktop transition is very jarring.
Windows 8 on a tablet is awesome.
Cary it around in tablet mode, then come home and dock it as a desktop. Best of both worlds; which is what they were aiming for. But I think my usage pattern is a minority :v:

I don't know why people expect an Ultrabook to be feature packed - the point of it is that it's a light, slick-looking machine. If you need expansion port and serviceability, don't get an Ultrabook. Simple as that.
And why are you concerned about the kernel in particular? Windows' forte is its ecosystem, really. And I know I say it all the time, but spend some more time around the new interface, it'll grow on you.
have you spent more than 3 minutes using either windows 8 or a macbook?
Used both extensively here. Macbooks I find more than a little annoying and unreliable, my windows 8 laptop is however fine. 8 took a little getting used to but I'm really enjoying the new features and startup time.
I've tried both a Surface RT and Surface Pro before and I really like the Pro, especially with the Type Cover. I really didn't like the Touch Cover, though. Pretty much no tactile feedback.
Hopefully they have nasty rubbery keyboard things.
I just want a higher resolution and better specs. I can only afford one, so I would like it to be a viable alternative to a laptop.

Err... What laptop do you know of outside of a Retina-display MacBook that has resolution above 1920x1080? Hell, the laptop I'm using right now (Dell D620) is still only 1440x900.
these are probably going to use the new Bay Trail chips by Intel. Fanless, 6-8 hours and x86. The future is here gentlemen.

also if indeed these new tablets use bay trail chips:
RT is dead as fucking death.

The ASUS Zenbook whatever - it's not out yet, though. Then there's the Toshiba Kirabook and I think Samsung as well as Lenovo have some.
All MS needs to do imo is keep the same basic features like the kickstand and type covers while improving what's under the hood and make the Pro version actually competitive with the pricing of iPads. Therefore, RT is priced less than the newest iPad while the Pro is priced near the same as the iPad, making it so that there is no reason why anyone would buy an iPad

Except RT is just as useless as iOS, the difference being the iPad actually has any apps.
I've got a surface pro currently. Thing works perfectly for my needs, plays most games, most videos, alright for drawing. And takes up hardly any space, which is wonderful.

Multitasking is a lot more feasible on RT, though. And there's support for mass storage and basically any device that works with Windows 8. iOS has a lot more apps, and RT feels kinda redundant with Bay Trail coming out and such.

Apps are useless for a person like me. I don't need an app for every single mundane task, so something like RT would be alright for me, though I'd much rather have Pro.

if you want shitloads of expansion don't use a laptop that's designed to be as thin and portable as possible
and really? the windows 8 interface is an acquired taste but the kernel is unarguably bloated

uh what's the logic here? you'll need apps to perform tasks if they're the only programs you can install on your device, or do you just like to sit and stare at the start screen all day?

i think he's talking about the RT, which has a pretty mediocre 1366x768 panel

I got incredibly confused for a second there because I though RT was Russia Today.
A good Surface Pro that wouldn't cost one thousand bucks would be very good
