School board members in Franklin County, Tennessee, may consider eliminating all extracurricular clubs in an effort to get rid of a newly formed Gay-Straight Alliance.

The GSA at Franklin County High School in Winchester has been under attack since it first met in January, with parents comparing it to ISIS, and students vandalizing the club's posters andwearing "Straight Pride" signs in protest. Apparently this is part of a longer, messier saga:

Oh, hey, Tennessee's in the news.
My university, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, is scheduled to get the budget for its diversity programs cut next year because the office of diversity put out a list of gender-neutral pronouns, and the state legislators didn't like it.
Our politicians are absolute arseholes, and they really don't like gay people.
Yup, let's just ignore all the lessons from the civil rights battle AGAIN.
Good fucking job, Franklin County.

A university shouldn't have a "diversity program" in the first place.
The GSA at Franklin County High School in Winchester has been under attack since it first met in January, with parents comparing it to ISIS, and students vandalizing the club's posters andwearing "Straight Pride" signs in protest.
This kinda shit I cannot fathom. Like I get it, you might not like their way of life, but fucking comparing them to ISIS? That's fuckin' insane to say, imo. I don't get why people can't just let their club be, honestly. Who are they even harming? I don't get it man...
A university shouldn't have a "diversity program" in the first place.
Care to elucidate that opinion?
Idiots, whether you like or dislike gay people shouldn't even be relevant to their right to start a club.
A university shouldn't have a "diversity program" in the first place.
The diversity office exists to provide scholarships for high-achieving minority students that otherwise wouldn't be able to attend the university, invites guest lecturers to speak on issues of racism, gender, sexuality, and the like, and advocates for a welcoming and inclusive campus environment. I may not agree with everything they do, but they provide very valuable services for a lot of people, and they've made the university a better place.
Personally, I believe a university is a place to be presented with opinions, views, and ideas that you don't grow up around. A diversity program is crucial to that concept. You attend to expand your horizons, not get job training.
A university shouldn't have a "diversity program" in the first place.
because a university shouldn't have a diversity of opinions to offer?
Holy fucking shit these people
How are you willing to go to spite these kids that you are willing to end ALL school clubs?
boy, i'm glad i don't live in that embarrassment of a state anymore. i miss the entertainment Nashville provides (the Grand Ole Opry is a sight to see) but things like this made me ashamed to tell people i lived there.

I've honestly never seen issues like this rise from TN, it's not perfect but the state itself isn't entirely bad.

You haven't been paying attention!
Our state's a wreck, and the oil baron of a governor isn't helping.

It's illegal to share a Netflix account here. Haslam passed that in his first year of office.
Time for the GSA to bring the fight to them.

Is it possible to even enforce that?

Ah, because nothing says 'ISIS' like the Gay-Straight Alliance...
Ah, because nothing says 'ISIS' like the Gay-Straight Alliance...
They'll be a left-wing American ISIS, and they'll wage a jihad of fabulousness against all us nonbelievers.
I'm okay with that actually.
Is it possible to even enforce that?
lol not without wasting a metric fuck ton of police time (so technically, the answer is yes) but nobody is actually going to do anything about it.

Conservatives have been attacking everything else in schools, they think fine arts are expensive wastes of time, they think anything but football is an expensive vanity sport, they think teaching critical thinking is bad but test taking is also bad, they were gonna come after clubs someday
We have some pretty backward ass counties here in TN, unfortunately.

what
Yaaaaay, go TN. Continue to be backwards shitlords, give me more reasons to fuck off to the west coast somewhere. Nevada, Oregon, Washington State.

They can drop the PC bullshit though.
You attend to expand your horizons, not get job training.
Not everyone goes into post-secondary to 'expand their horizons'. Most students are there because they're told having a degree --> 40,000/year salary. They're there to get a living wage. Certainly why I'd be in post-secondary, but then again I'm going to attend a specialized tech school if I do go so it's a moot point anyway. Not much room for a diversity program in a school that teaches nothing but how to fix cars.
It's hilarious how petty all this is, from all sides and fronts. A bunch of kids being stupid, followed by more stupidity from the knee jerk reaction of other kids, followed by more stupidity from the university itself

When I have enough saved up to resettle and live long enough to get a living wage out there I will. Probably be about 15-20 miles out into the country, just close enough to get high-speed internet but far enough out that I have a few acres to myself and my nearest neighbors have four legs. I'll miss 102.9 The Buzz, but eh.
