FREEPORT, Texas (AP) -- It's the catch of a lifetime, but it's not clear whether a Texas fisherman landed an 8-foot shark or it landed him.
Jason Kresse, 29, of Freeport, and two crew members had been fishing for red snapper about 50 miles into the Gulf of Mexico and were dumping fish guts into the water about 3:45 a.m. Monday when they heard two big splashes in the distance.
"All of a sudden something hit the side of the boat," Kresse told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "He ends up landing on the back of the boat."
The mako shark had apparently been in a rush to feed. It began thrashing around, and Kresse said he and his crew couldn't get close to the 375-pound fish to toss it back in the water. It damaged the boat before dying several hours later.
Kresse, who has been fishing since he was a child, said the unplanned catch was a shock. Just unloading it was a challenge because it was so heavy.
"We had to use a forklift to get it off the boat when we got to the dock," Kresse said.
The crew didn't have a permit to catch sharks, so Kresse contacted federal fisheries officials on shore to get one. Mike Cox, a spokesman with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, said there's no violation because the shark's death was an accident.
The shark is on display at a seafood business in Freeport, about 55 miles south of Houston.
"I'm going to get a mount of it," Kresse said. "A fish jumping in your boat, 400 pounds, that's unbelievable."
They're learning to fly. :coolfish:
That is somewhat unnerving.
Well normally I'm against fishing sharks, since they're already getting fucked hard by the finning industry(FUCKING DONKEYS), but the thing jumped in his boat. So I guess it was suicidal.
I would have jumped the fuck out of the boat.
I would have jumped the fuck out of the boat.
Into possibly more sharks?
No thanks.
Besides, I'm not afraid of a 375 pound shark jumping in my boat with the intention of "Gimme dat boat, muhfukka, its mine!"
just kidding
id be terrified
Mount that bitch up!
Guilt free, not your fault that it died.

Lifting that thing and trying to throw it back would be dangerous to the boat crew and the shark. So they did the right thing in this situation.
Makos are also badass:

They're like the great whites more agile long lost cousin.
I've heard of makos jumping into boats before, that would probably freak me out a little tbh
Wasn't there a 300 pound tiger-ray that jumped out of the water and onto someone in a boat, recently?
I can officially say, with absolute knowledge, that if a shark jumped onto my boat then I without a single logical thought would have screamed like a woman and pinned the bitch and broke it.
Or jumped into the ocean.
We're going to need a bigger boat.
"Sup?"
"Not much, You?"

When sailors of the past crafted up sea monster stories they were not joking. They just didn't know what they were seeing.
I would not have let the shark suffocate to death "for several hours" if I couldn't get him back into the water, but then again if you tried to put him down he might bite your ankle off or something

yet again, it makes a kickass wall mount.

You could get it off your boat if you knew what you were doing. It would just be extremely dangerous. Think of Steve Irwin wrestling a croc. Would you do that shit? What you'd have to do, is let the shark get tired after a few minutes(so it stops thrashing around as much), get some trust worthy and ballsy buddies to lift it up. If you can flip it upside down without laying it down on its dorsal fin do that. That will put it in tonic immobility and it will be out cold. Then just toss it over the side. If you fuck up you could drop the shark on it's fin or belly and put it in unneeded pain before it dies and or gets tossed back. The damage you could do by dropping it could be fatal later on if you did manage to throw it back. Or you could loose an arm and die of infection if you manage to get help before you bleed out. It's really dangerous to pick up a shark of this size without proper protection.
Wow, that thing really jumped the shark.
I love sharks, and if I had the balls I would get it back into the water.
Everything's big in Texas.

Except for brains.
That's how sharks commits suicide
Shark jacking minus the effort. It comes straight to you!
