Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays? Political Correctness Run A muck

'Tis the season for caroling, decorations, and political correctness. This Christmas we have the new holiday tree! See here: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/rhode-island-gov-lincoln-chafee-holiday-tree-remark-angers-thousands-roman-catholic-church-article-1.987823
I don't own a holiday tree but I own a Christmas Tree! :)
So here is my debate. Political correctness has overrun Christmas this year. I can't watch a show without being wished a happy holidays or watching a commercial about a holiday tree. The name of the NATIONAL U.S. HOLIDAY is CHRISTMAS! NOT HOLIDAY! I don't care if you have Hanukkah or Kwanzaa or whatever, the name of the holiday is Christmas! You know, the celebration of Jesus Christ being born? The holiday that celebrates Jesus? Obviously not too many people have heard of it. You can say Merry Christmas, it's understood what day it is. You don't have to say Happy Holidays! Even if you're an atheist you can just celebrate Christmas as "a day of giving" or something, but don't force everyone into you're beliefs by attacking anyone who says Merry Christmas.
Whichever. I don't really care either way, to be overly judgmental towards either is the opposite of the festivities behind it anyway so don't be.
who cares

they're not telling you you cant have a christmas tree, they're just saying that the official government tree isnt a christmas tree

but seriously no one should feel touchy over a simple statement
its the most innocent (lazy) attempt at being inclusive in the world and being wicked caremad over "happy holidays" instead of "merry christmas" is just indicative of what I'm gonna call your Christmas Privilege (akin to white privilege, et al)
I'm fairly certain there is no "national holiday", and it's extremely ignorant to say "I don't care if you have Hanukkah or Kwanzaa or whatever, the name of the holiday is Christmas!" considering Christmas and celebrating Christ are a strictly Christian-denomination sort of celebration.
I don't really care either way. I'll say happy holidays if I'm not sure the person celebrates Christmas or not, otherwise the traditional Merry Christmas. I don't even celebrate Christmas in a traditional sense being an atheist, so the holidays have basically combined into a time of spending time with family anyway.
You're just as bad as the overly politically correct by complaining, by the way.
You say what you want, but I'm saying merry christmas and there's no way in hell to stop me.
i find it insulting that you can't say merry christmas or happy hanukkha without people getting upset
fucking deal with it
soon we can't say what model car we're driving without people feeling insulted that we don't just call it 'car'
I hate all this PC crap. Just call it a christmas tree. I can understand saying Happy Holidays though, since not everyone celebrates Christmas. But it's not rude to say Merry Christmas.
I don't care that non-Christians celebrate Christmas, and I really wish other people would too. I am really sick of everyone going "OH WOW WHY DO NON-CHRISTIANS CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS? LALALAL, JESUS IS SAD BECAUSE SANTA STOLE HIS SPOT."
I think people have to accept that Christmas is pretty much no longer a Christian holiday, but a 'everyone' holiday, like Halloween or somesuch. I guess if people get really offended, the name could be changed from Christ to something else, although some people already call it X-mas and such.

except people don't get upset when you say merry christmas. that really isn't a thing that happens.
the only time ive ever seen people get upset is when i say happy holidays because of the whole "war on christmas" culture warrior bullshit
They're both correct. Only thing that pisses me off it when people say "Happy Christmas!"
"Happy Holidays" was made to be inclusive of other religions for those who had to be religiously neutral. The purpose isn't to "take Christ out of Christmas." People don't attack Thursday for being named after Thor.
OP, I believe you've been misled by Christian propaganda telling you that the lack of official representation of your religion is akin to persecution.
I really don't care what you use.
It's not like i'm going to get butthurt over you saying 2 different words.
Ask the hohohozzzz
I'm going to say Merry Christmas, I don't care what other people say, but the people who do have a problem with me saying it, well they can have themselves a Merry fucking Christmas.
Another thing is up here they've re-named the Easter long weekend to Spring long weekend, and this one just irritates me. Calling Christmas break the winter/holiday break I understand, there's more than one holiday for that break, but Easter long weekend exists only for Easter, and it just irritates me when PC goes so far as to remove the only reason for that break from its name. Holidays versus Christmas, yes, but the Easter weekend is that and that only, it exists for no other reason.
The only thing I don't understand is the "holiday tree". I'm pretty sure that's only associated with Christmas.
I just say Happy Holidays because it let's me be lazy and not go over every single Winter Solstice celebration. I'm not personally offended when other people use Merry Christmas, and I use it as well when I am talking to someone I know for a fact is Christian.
Personally, it's a trivial issue to be upset about.
You can't really go wrong with saying happy holidays.
Just be happy. It's traditional to be happy.

Doesn't sound right in a British accent.
I just say Merry Christmas, although I don't really care if someone says Happy Holidays. Do people really get upset when you say Merry Christmas instead of Happy Holidays anyway (or vice versa?)
Happy Holidays is a neutral and very un-offending term that you cant really go wrong with, as some people simply don't celebrate Christmas. When people say Xmas, it could be offending, but not certainly not Happy Holidays.
I usually say Merry Christmas though.
There are people who get "offended" by Jingle Bell Rock. If someone says Happy Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa and you don't celebrate it, just smile and say "You too." since the holiday must mean a lot to them.
Merry christmas foreigners!

Happy winter holidays from latvia.
Or lithuania.
Whichever.

You're mixing things up. It's yule, not Christmas.

You don't have a British accent, so no, I won't say "Hehpy Hawledays".
I'm an atheist and still say merry Christmas because it was what I grew up hearing.
I make it a point to wish anyone who says "Happy Holidays" a merry christmas instead. Nine times out of ten their face turns red faster than a red light between you and something your late for.
