Conversion from FAT32 to NTFS says drive is dirty to convert, even after using CHKDSK

Title should give you an idea of what's wrong.
I'm trying to convert my FAT32 external HDD to a NTFS for Team Fortress 2, but the Windows XP CMD says it's dirty and tells me to use CHKDSK. After doing that, it still tells me the same thing.
Done CHKDSK three times now to no avail. Anyone know how to fix this problem?
you have to reformat the external drive first
If it's dirty you obviously need to run it through the dishwasher.
Have you tried a defragmentation?
Format the drive. Don't use any of those "converter" programs out there; they rarely work.
The only reason you wouldn't want to format is if there's important data on the drive. In that case, back it up, and reformat. Reformats ALWAYS work (unless there's an open handle to the drive, or the drive is physically damaged).

convert.exe has always worked for me.
I've never had success with the conversion programs, EVER. Even the supposedly really good ones. Maybe it's just me...
Problem solved! All I had to do was add "/r" after "chkdsk /f". This makes the process way longer, but now I can convert the drive to NTFS properly!
I appreciate the help, though!
