Fifty people died after a Boeing passenger plane crashed while landing in the city of Kazan in central Russia on Saturday, according to the Emergencies Ministry. A doctor working at the scene said that only ashes and rubble were left from the plane.
The passenger aircraft Boeing 737-500 operated by the regional Tatarstan airline exploded after crash-landing in the airport of Kazan at 15:25 GMT. The jet’s nose reportedly hit the ground during touchdown. Flight U363 was coming from Moscow Domodedovo airport.
Initially, 44 fatalities were reported in the crash. Later the Federal Air Transport Agency said that 50 people - including six crew members - were on board, all of whom were killed.
When the Emergencies Ministry published a list of the victims, it included two children. It was also confirmed that Irek Minnikhanov, son of Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov, was among the passengers killed in the accident.
Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke to Minnikhanov on the phone, expressing his condolences to relatives and friends of the deceased, and to the Tatarstan leader personally.
Authorities and the airline’s insurance company will pay a compensation of around US$93,700 to each family of those killed in the plane crash. A mourning ceremony has been set for November 18.
Rescuers have already recovered the bodies of all 50 people from the crash site, according to Tatarstan's Disaster Medicine Center. Now they are looking for flight data recorders.
The crash being in Russia doesn't even raise the question of 'how could this have happened?' in my mind.

i can already see how bright of a person you are
The head of the Tatarstan FSB (our version of FBI) was confirmed to be there too.
Tough shit, but I'm not exactly surprised.
i'm planning to travel out of the country in december and early january
seeing this doesn't make me feel better, heh

I think you should get that 0.30 posts a day lower buddy.
welp fuck flying

people die in car crashes too, "welp fuck driving"
welp fuck flying
And flying is STILL the safest way to get anywhere.

Same here, was hoping to travel to Prague or somewhere else in Europe for the winter holidays.

The thing that makes us feel unsafe with airplanes is that we're never the ones driving. With driving we know we're behind the wheel so it makes us think that we have a chance to change things.
people die in car crashes too, "welp fuck driving", guess we should ride bikes then huh
people also possibly die by bikes, "welp fuck riding bikes"
cars and bikes don't ever nosedive into the ground and then explode

That might apply for a pilot riding as a passenger. I might have a fair grasp of aerodynamics but I'd have a pilot fly the plane over myself any day

Flying the plane is the least difficult part of flying a plane

I feel safer when the one driving is a professional, be it by car or by plane, but in air it's less likely for anyone to crash into you :v:
cars and bikes don't ever nosedive into the ground and then explode
they can nosesteer into obstacles and then explode though
cars and bikes don't ever nosedive into the ground and then explode
They don't?
Oh shit, what have I been driving then?
welp fuck flying
I understand being scared when you are flying on the same plane model and with the same company (been there), but come the hell on.

I feel equally safe driving or riding passenger.
I think the fear comes from the fact that you can potentially survive a car crash but it seems much less likely that you can fall thousands of meters and still live through that.
So, uh. The thing nosedived into the ground and it was caught on camera:

yeah, the severity of 'when a crash happens' is what really gets the fear going, but the frequency of crashes and the frequency of deaths are miniscule
From what I have read in newspapers here is that the same 737 had a crashlanding in Brazil in 2002 where the landing gear broke. After that it was repared and sold to Romania which sold it to Tatarstan Airlines.
A journalist that had been on the same plane that day told media that it was shaking a lot during landing.

If it was common for planes to crash then it wouldn't make the news.

Plus you're closer to the ground when driving and you don't fall a couple kilometers if something goes wrong is what I think when I hear someone with a phobia of flying. Personally I've never flown in my entire life so I don't know if that's one of the things that go through peoples heads in those topics, but in mine it is
In Russia eh? How long till we are told it the gays fault.
welp fuck flying
Flying's actually one of the safest forms of travel.
Knowing Russia, and knowing that the head of the FSB was in the plane, this smells more fishy than a fish market

Must've been mechanical failure, but I still don't understand how they achieved that AoA coming in for a landing.
cars and bikes don't ever nosedive into the ground and then explode
Sure they can. They probably do so much more than planes. Do you know how many people die a week in ground vehicle accidents? Compared to how many planes crash a decade?
cars and bikes don't ever nosedive into the ground and then explode
From the first thread that I already posted (was before I saw video though)
Source says this crash was with a smaller airport, basically the equivalent of a regional airport. The problem with these types of airports is they don't require as many hours as a commercial airline company.
These airports are very common for younger pilots trying to get enough hours to fly for the bigger airlines.
My best guess is that the pilot was horribly inexperienced and fucked up.
As for the planes vs cars debate. Planes are drastically safer than cars and the while "the drop from 30,000" feet argument is retarded. Planes maintain flight by generating lift from the dynamic effect of air on the wings. I'm not sure if you have ever looked at a plane, but they have wings.
FAA regulations require that any plan (in the US at least) has to be at least 100 miles from an emergency runway or airport at all times. Mainly because a plane at 30,000 going 500mph when both of its engines die has a tendency to be able to glide long distances. I say both engines because planes have one engine fail all the time. Of course they don't tell you when it happens because it would cause panic and it is no big deal at all because other that lift off, the plane doesn't really need both engines as badly as you would think.
After seeing the video my best guess would be something fucky with the instruments considering it was dark and how easily pilots can get disorientated in those kinds of conditions without instruments.
