Basically I've spent the past few day trying to figure out where a whirring noise in my pc was coming from, I have worked out it's the fan on the graphics card I have. Now I'm wondering if it is possible to replace the fan on the card which is an "Asus Radeon HD 5870" card. If anyone knows where I could get a replacement fan that would be great, unfortunately the card was bought last year on ebay so I have no way of RMAing the card so I need to find a replacement fan or get a new graphics card.
I should get a title for the amount I post here.
you could search around for an aftermarket cooler, don't know any myself though
At the moment I'm trying a few things. I've got my tower on it's side and it's not making the noise but that could change come next boot up. I'm wondering if I'd be able to take it apart yet still be able to send it to AMD to get it fixed/replaced.

Depends, what brand did you get? I know XFX allows you to place custom coolers.

Typically, they don't allow you to add aftermarket parts on. With AMD CPU's, they can void your warranty for having a non-stock cooler on it.
The wirrling noise can be the fan getting misaligned.. press lightly down on the center of the fan see if that improves. the situation

It helped but as soon as I took my finger away the whirring started again.

Bad bearings, or its still not becoming aligned. Find an aftermarket cooler if you're out of warranty.
Well, I got in contact with the guy I bought it from and he said if I send it to him he'll RMA it and send out the replacement if I pay for shipping. So I'll probably do that.
To be honest, the best way to check for "warranty eligibility" is by seeing whether if there are any "Warranty Void if Removed" sticker over any heatsink screws.
hy didn't you just buy a Asus Radeon HD 5830 it's cheaper and has the same capabilities.

why? the only difference is a couple of shader units etc. Now i think about it, isn't the 5870 crossfire by default?

First of all, google what crossfire is.
Second:

Got this shit when my 5850's fan started doing that after I accidentally kicked the side of my case.
Works beautifully, 30C all around and can't hear a thing.

Its compatible with a huge range of cards, including the 5870.

No that would be the HD59**
The 5870 has higher clockspeeds then the 5830 and is way faster.
It might be the same card series (HD58**) but there is a hughe difference in performance.
Ah sweet I'll try that. This guy from Hong Kong doesn't seem to want me to return the card.

Isn't a 5970 just two 5870's Glued together?
Just an update I fixed the card using a 3rd party fan and it seems to be working fine. So I want to thank you all for your quick replies.
