I immediately thought it was not real world and not even close. Annoying narrative. Can someone sum up the last half of the video for me please? I can't force myself to watch it all because the narrator seems to never get to the point and is too annoying.
It's been 4 years and currently all we have gotten is just bunch of pretty videos and promises.

The bit where he said that we could tell that we could tell if a scene is from the real world or not, ehh... I could kinda figure that something's not right. It's still kinda neat though I guess.
I just hate how smug he sounds. It makes it a lot less believable and makes it come off as a hyped up scam.
This video promises that the next video will feature information about at least 1 game being made with this technology. It also mentions animations being entirely possible with this, so we'll see when they release the next video (assuming they ever do).

It was quite easy to tell it was fake. Maybe my eyes are just too trained for that. I hope that they are on to something but will remain sceptical until they show animation and collision detection.
He got to the point before two minutes had passed.
He really spent one minute talking about youtube statistics and stupidly annoyingly hyping shit up. And then "these images were not real life"! I fucking quit.

As a google earth ish thing it's kinda cool I guess but my concerns for it being used in games would be physics collision and maybe transparency.
I'd say rendering pretty environments is one of the least important aspects when it comes to improving realistic graphics right now. I think animations are a much bigger hindrance, it's difficult to make a face "behave human" with just motion capture or to make mocap animations interact with non-mocapped objects and scenarios. Stuff like not making characters' fingers glitch through objects they're supposed to be holding, turning around to face the moving player they're talking to, pupils following objects that follow unscripted paths, etc. No wonder so many games (still) use masked characters and briefing cutscenes.
gosh that presenter really has a raging boner over that
This is only usable in a game if your copying really world locations, but doing that just massively limits the artistic value and scope of the game. Because eventually, people will run out of real world locations, secondly, using real world locations severely limits a a game both artistically and in terms of level/map design because their are only limited compositions.
That church looked pretty amazing, though. But yeah, as mentioned, we need some animation as well.
well, it's a great tool for importing environments for further work in video games etc. You could modify it and make it suit your needs and even change parts of it, if you want. Transparency and such could be added manually, i guess. Overall it's probably very handy and makes stuff easier for developers, but it should not be a shortcut.
The moment he mentioned that we were watching "real life footage" I knew he was going to force some "cool twist" into the video by saying "btw, this wasn't real life at all", since the footage was so blatantly computer rendered

It's quite a big world after all. Though I would just prefer made-up locations, because for the real-world equivalent I would rather actually go to those places and experience them with all of my senses, rather than just seeing them. (I want to especially experience them sense of taste)
He really spent one minute talking about youtube statistics and stupidly annoyingly hyping shit up. And then "these images were not real life"! I fucking quit.
I could tell immediately, the condescending speech wasn't necessary at all.
even if this was impressive (it's not), this is not how you showcase tech. you present it as it is, you don't dumb it down and make a grandiose presentation. you just show the effects and tell us what they're called in their technical term. people will decide whether or not to be impressed or whether or not it looks real. but this guy talks down to his audience, dumbing down the language and trying to convince us it's great. anyone with good tech knows that it'll speak for itself. this don't
ATOMS!
It's just a big fat hoax.
It's been 4 years and currently all we have gotten is just bunch of pretty videos and promises.
It's kinda weird though, I really hope this software they are presenting is not a hoax however their videos seem really, really fishy. Publishing once a year doesn't help the problem as well.
Not good enough.

http://potree.org/wp/demo/ Euclideon promises to solve loading (but then again the potree demo is in your browser) and gives you better placement for each "3d pixel" I think purely from a point cloud data viewer it's impressive.
Fucking hell I want to punch him in the face.

It's just point cloud data, you don't need laser scanners to create this kind of data. You can even take existing models, import them into whatever 3D editor application you use (3D Studio Max for instance, and I know Blender too), and use their plugins to export point cloud data from your existing meshes at a preset resolution. The data itself is static as presented as well, but that's because the product and audience is of the geospacial industry, as mentioned in the video, not so much the entertainment industry. At least, that's what I got from it.
ive never wanted to strike anyone ive never met so badly
That's not to say it was PRE-rendered.
