Hello Facepunch.
Basically all of my friends have been getting jobs and trying to get them, and I figured it is time I get one. I am 16, almost 17 and a Sophmore in highschool.
Currently my grades lack a bit, but I've been doing better. I never study at home and such, and I think that getting a job will help me get off the computer and work on my school work more. I am thinking about applying at Olive Garden or Home Depot and wanted to know if anyone has had an experiences there? I would of course likely be a dishwasher or a greeter of some sort, or likely work a cash register.
I live in Virginia where the minimum wage is 7.25 an hour, and I calculated it to be around 5.2k USD a year including Tax.
I wanted to know if any of you could help boost me to get a job, or if you find it is a good idea at all. Again, I really think a job would benefit my self-esteem, and cause my grades to improve a lot more, of course I'm unsure of that because I have never had previous work experience.
I really am the type that enjoys work, no matter what type of work it is (As long as it isn't something disgusting or despicable) I also get out of school at 3:15 so I was wondering if hours would be an issue.
Thanks, and if I get a job I plan on saving up until I'm 18 and buying a cheap car and some other things I need.
Edit: I'm also having a bit of trouble giving my parents motivation to allow me to get a job.
I worked a grocery store at that age, just fill out an application, wait a few days, then call them up and say "hey I applied recently and I just want to know the status of my application". This shows a bit of initiative and a good chance they might get your application to the top of the pile.
Apply to as many places as you can. A job is a job and, at least in my area, they can be hard to come by. My first job was (and still is) at a grocery store. They actually called me back after I applied online, but not everywhere does that. I'd check places that have online applications in case getting physical ones proves difficult.
I'm not quite comprehending why my post is dumb.
I came here asking for your help and motivation.
Anyways, thanks to the above post. Is a Grocery Store job worth it in your opinion?
Alright, I'll contact every Virginian employer with the message "stupidass wishes to work for you".
You'll get the job for sure. Is that the boost you need?

Way to be an ass.
I'm pretty sure they are just gonna call you a stupid ass and leave it at that

THE TABLES HAVE TURNED
I'm thinking of getting a job too, though during the summer. At our ages I'd suggest checking out the movie theatres for jobs. For me I'm thinking of working at Best Buy in the computer section.
Oh dear, why did I post this thread on a web forum where 96% of the members have no experience past playing on a computer.
I'm actually getting a new job as a dishwasher. I first started out in fast food(I was 16) and been working for 4 years and I'm finally getting out and getting a new job! Just keep filling out apps and eventually your get a call back, plus summer is coming so you should get more hours. Also why don't your parents want you to get a job? Shit everyone's parents want there kids to get a job.

I think a grocery store job is a great first job. It really builds character and work ethic, plus you get to interact with people most of the time no matter what job you're doing in the store. Not to mention, you make good money. Well, I do - but I'm sure that all varies by region and stuff.

I'm pretty sure 65% of the forum has a stable job.
I'm pretty sure 65% of the forum has a stable job.
And the other 35% is 13 years old.

clearly you make up some of that 96%
I work picking tobacco. Woo, I'm partially responsible for killing people
I've got mine already, I gain 500$/Mo for doing almost nothing, most of the time I'm just browsing through the web.

Well your post is basically "lol i want a job, but i need someone to hold my hand thought the process and make me feel good." Also you can't really make that comment seeing as you're asking for advice on facepunch for a fairly simple issue.
You're making it more harder then it has to be, go online and fill out a bloody application. Call back within a few days and mention you sent in an application and would like to know the status of it. If no one gets back to you when you call keep calling over the next few days.
If I was you I would just go online and just send in a ton of applications to different places (do ones that are hiring and not hiring) and check in on them.
I sent in dozens of applications for my first job and only got a response from 3 places. I rejected one because of the hours and pay and accepted the second job. Then a day later I got a offer but rejected because I already started a new job.
Home depot is a typical retail chain, I worked retail before and didn't enjoy it as much as most people do. Retail for me was a love hate relationship, I really enjoyed working with some good people but I hated the bullshit I went though with managers and supervisors. Managers at my store didn't care about the people, just the profits and their bloated paychecks and bonuses. You'll end up doing a lot of work (not bad though, you get to work different departments and gain new experience).
Don't expect to get your dream job right off the bat, you got to work for it. Also don't get that mindset that you're too good to do a certain type of work. At my old job I didn't work as a janitor, I worked as a regular sales floor associate and forklift driver but it never stopped me from giving a hand to the janitorial staff and clean up some nasty messes.

pretty much this.
and don't work at fast food, ever. once you get in that business you get STUCK. fast food employees almost always end up getting stuck in fast food for a really long time. retail is where it's at -- you get great people skills and work experience.

worth it? no
better than nothing? absolutely. it gives me enough money to pay insurance to drive my moms car (...) and buy lotsa drum equipment, plus pay for my drum lessons
I'm working at a grocery store right now. Good hours, however, prepare to do some hard work lol. Pretty fun though.
What help do you need exactly? Go to stores, get applications, fill them out, ????, profit.
Also, I second the statement about fast food, I've been working in a fast food joint for almost a year and its hell.
i work for the government and thats all i am allowed to say
:ninja:
I was 12 when I got my first job.
Include a resume with an application form, they like that kind of thing
I have had an interview to be a kitchenhand in a club near my house. Waiting for them to finish their interviews, then to call to say whether i got it or not.
It was my first interview so it probably didnt go that good, but its always experience for my next one.
I mailed my resume and application forms to them, because if you hand it in at the desk theres a good chance they will just push it aside and leave it. If you mail it to them it will actually get inside.

Yeah, the Metro can be quite hard, can't it? I know my little boy, Pyotr, went off at age 14, and I haven't heard from him in 10 years. Either he's been taken by the dark ones, or he's dead.
Such is life in the Metro.

My cousin did the best buy thing, usually the problems are easy as shit to fix if you know your way around a computer apparently, and if not, google :v: I was gonna do it this summer but I think you need to be at least 18 for it.
