• What's the point of a gaming keyboard?

You press a button and it happens. Simple. So why would someone need a keyboard? If anything, this is a gaming keyboard: http://store.razerzone.com/store/razerusa/en_US/pd/productID.221675100/parentCategoryID.35156900/categoryId.53491100 But what's the point?
Dammit you guys, quite typing in the alphabets in caps and tell me what's the point of gaming keyboards.
I'm hoping you guys could convince me enough to buy this useless piece of sexy crap: Also, post what keyboard you have (just for curiousity): This sexy beast is the i-Rocks RF-6520 Cordless 1.5 AREA keyboard. It weighs very light-weight and is thin like those apple keyboards. Not to mention extremely affordable. I mean, actually affordable.
Whats wrong the generic white/black keyboard.
Some keyboards allow for more key presses at once. Try it yourself, hold down both shift keys and type the alphabet. ABDFGHJKLNSTY is what I get, and it is what most cheap keyboards get. Try it on a gaming keyboard, and you'll probably get the whole alphabet. Edit: Turns out I was wrong... Sorry.
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ shitty cheap gateway keyboard here
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ shitty cheap gateway keyboard here
So gaming keyboards aren't about typing capital letters with 2 shift keys held down.

Dammit you guys, quite typing in the alphabets in caps and tell me what's the point of gaming keyboards.
Dammit you guys, quite typing in the alphabets in caps and tell me what's the point of gaming keyboards.
Nothing other than extra keys for binding. Also apparently gaming keyboards are better since they usually can allow more than 3 keys pressed at once (which in my opinion is point less since I don't ever press more than 3 keys at once).
Some of the "gaming" keyboards are more sensitive than conventional keyboard Great for playing games such as Touhou :v:
The main differences are lower response times, macro keys, more keys in general, backlit buttons, more durability and sometimes an LCD display Like on a Logitech G18
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ!@#$%^&*()_+|}{":?><~ Sidewinder X6 Still going on strong. Some Gaming keyboards have nice extra features while some have gimmicks. So choose carefully
Other then the gimmicks they are designed to take more punishment then other keyboards and the media controls and macro keys on my Logitech g110 are a god send. Though this is what it got on your keys test ABCEFGHJKLQRTVWXYZ
Mine is backlit, so it is very easy to see without shining my lamp directly on it. Plus, all of the macro buttons come in handy for certain games like WoW.
I can play Frets on Fire without fucking up three note chords using a Saitek :smug:
The only ghosting I've ever noticed on my $20 Logitech board is that I can't press Q to switch weapons in CS when I'm crouching with Ctrl and moving forwards with W at the same time. Granted, that would be bad but I can't justify spending money on a new keyboard when I don't game that seriously.
I can get 4 keys on my crappy keyboard that came with my now 10-11 year old Dell.... When do I ever have the need to do that? Never.
Ghosting drives me crazy. It doesn't matter whether I'm playing a video game or not, I notice it with every day typing as well. Some "gaming" keyboards have helpful things for specific games (like the Lycosa's insane macros and hotkeys) or just general luxurious features (G series keys that open up all sorts of programs/initiate macros/etc on demand). I assume most people get them over mechanical keyboards because: of the bling factor, they think they're the best you can get (didn't you before you heard about mechanical keyboards?), and everyone else has them. Seriously, out of all the pictures in the desk thread how many have mechanical keyboards vs logitech/saitek/razer? You see everyone with nice setups has one so when you're striving to make your setup better you mock their peripheral choices without knowing they may regret them. I initially got the original G15 however long ago for the "cool screen and macros!". Later on in 2007 I got a Lycosa because I thought it was pretty boss at the time and as always I had money to blow. My original G15 was damaged in a flood and my brother got me a G15v2 last year for xmas. I used it for about 3 months and sold it because the screen is useless (I only used it for KDR in BC2 beta before they added it to the scoreboard). I used an older Dell keyboard for a month or so before I dug up my old Lycosa...I couldn't type a post or play a game for 5 minutes without harassing my backspace key or dying because the kid in front of me got to watch me stumble around trying to quick switch while coming out of a walk (shift + wasd). Sometimes I'm tempted to pull the Dell back out for SC2 so I can get fucked by the ghosting and appreciate my ricer, fingerprint magnet more. I humiliate myself with this piece of shit just to avoid ghosting until it breaks and I can justify that filco I've been wanting. oh, and asking whether gaming keyboards are worth it is like asking if bose are worth it. No, they're not, but that doesn't mean you should stick to your apple earbuds. You'll still appreciate an investment in a nice mechanical keyboard because they usually have anti ghosting and quality switches for the same price of most gaming keyboards.
gaming keyboard: rice lol useless shit led cool fuckin' neato final verdict: get filco [editline]29th November 2010[/editline] ie. read above post looks like i'm a big dummy head
CDEFGHIJKLMOPQRSTUVWXYZ I'd say that's pretty good for a laptop keyboard. Anyways, I personally don't find gaming keyboards anymore useful or better than a regular keyboard. I have a g15 and g110, never use any of the g keys or use the little screen on the keyboard, since my focus is on my desktop screen where it should be. edit: THEQUICKROWFOXJUMPSOVERTHELZYDOG
ABDEFGHIJKLNOPQRSUW Generic black/white dell keyboard, never needed anything else.
Oh, and a good test would be to go into counter strike, for example, and grab a gun. Fire a few times and shift walk while checking the tab screen to see how many people are left. At the same time, reload your gun. I dunno about you guys, but W + Shift + Tab = no R on my shitty keyboards. It's small habits like this that I've developed (and they work really well) that just don't work in first person shooters. Even if I've already let go of another key and I'm just moving quickly to the next, it locks up everything leaving me royally fucked. Imaging trying to hold a half way decent APM in an RTS or performing any quick keystroke in an FPS with a keyboard that can't handle 4 keys pressed in a relatively small time period. You probably don't even think about it but if you play video games on a decent anti ghosting logitech/saitek/razer/etc you probably use the anti ghosting feature. I know I didn't think anything of it for years until I switched back to a dell kb. Now, gaming keyboards are still a waste, but anti ghosting features are certainly not! The alphabet trick depends on how fast you can type...I can't type the caps alphabet very fast (maybe not even fast enough to need anti ghosting!) but I get blocked out from normal typing (especially in steam when I'm beating on my keyboard) and in games 24/7
BCEGHIMNOPQRUVWXZ my 8-ish year old keyboard. I love its feel and would kill to never have to use a flat keyboard
ABDFGHJKLNSTY Stupid HP DV6 keyboard
Plugged in an old Apple Pro Keyboard from 2000. ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ Also a new flat one that my dad god(SO SEXY AND CRISP AND RESPONSIVE) ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ I guess Apple just makes damn good keyboards.
The quick brown fox jumps over the la dog (hold down both shift keys and type "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog")
It thoroughly depends on the "gaming" keyboard, but as has been said, it's about input lag and how many buttons can be pressed at the same time. Some games, like for example when playing alien in the new avp, are extremely button intensitive. Or simply sprint crouch jumping. Some people like to have macros or whatever I never saw the point of anything but standard layout since that is what the controls will have been designed for anyway.
I have an old PS/2 Gateway SK-9920. I'm actually surprised that it passed the alphabet shift key test, and recognizes 4 letters keys at once. I wouldn't call it a gaming keyboard, but it did come at a great price: free.
