Apple has been laying off some of its newly-hired retail employees, reports MacRumors.
One report says that all employees at a United Kingdom store with less than six months of experience were laid off.
Additionally, we can confirm that a Washington, DC-area Apple Store has cut employee hours and is in the middle of a hiring freeze.
We're puzzled by this as Apple's business has proven especially strong lately.

Over the past couple of weeks, we've been receiving reports that Apple has been laying off a number of recently-hired staff members at its retail stores. Most of the reports have been coming from Apple retail employees in the United Kingdom, but several of these reports claim that similar actions are taking place at stores around the world. We've also been receiving reports of long-term cutbacks in hours for part-time staff in the United States and Canada.
Apple has come under some criticism for its treatment of retail store employees given the massive amounts of revenue the company's stores bring in, relying on its employees' devotion to the company and a strong fan base to help retain staff and attract new employees. The company has recently instituted salary increases and other improved benefits in an effort to improve its relationship with its workers and public perception, but these latest reports suggest that the company is still facing some challenges in morale and other areas as it seeks to balance its staffing levels.
According to one report, all employees at a certain store in the United Kingdom with less than six months of service have been laid off, including a group that had been hired only one month ago and had just completed their training program. New hiring has also been halted, and internal company transfers between stores have been placed on hold.
Another report similarly indicates that a number of newly-hired employees have just been laid off, while several longer-term employees who had recently been promoted never received their pay increases and are now being demoted back to their previous positions.
A third report comes from one of those who was laid off at an Apple Store in the United Kingdom, a source who notes that three separate training groups have all been laid off in their entirety within the past week, all of whom were still within their probationary periods as new employees.
In the United States and Canada, we're hearing that part-time staff have been seeing significantly reduced hours for the past several months, with some staff reportedly having their hours cut back to zero. And while Apple reportedly promised part-time staff that their hours would rebound with the back-to-school rush, that has apparently not taken place and employees are continuing to stand by with very few hours on their schedules. Another report indicates that Apple has reduced scheduled hours at one retail store by several hundred hours per week as of early August and limited employee vacations, apparently to help keep full-time staff on site and reduce reliance on part-time employees.
Apple's retail store staffing levels do tend to fluctuate as the company seeks to meet demand and work around busy periods such as new device launches and holiday shopping periods. With the next-generation iPhone apparently set to launch approximately one month from now and the holiday shopping season ramping up relatively soon afterward, Apple may soon be able to find more hours for its part-time staff members, but it appears that a number of recent full-time hires are already looking for new jobs.
If the apple ship was sinking that would be great
That's rather curious, but I feel like it's just some giant advertising thing. Apple is the kind of company that I can see doing this.

Firing people for a PR stunt? That would be a new low
Maybe the gain vs loss for the amount of retail workers wasn't good enough? Don't act like apple is suddenly going to stutter and fall.
Oh apparently this guy became the new SVP of retail in January, so it's probably him 'implementing his vision' or whatever
Macrumors commenters seem convinced he's a faggot who's going to run this shit into the ground
working retail blows.
If the apple ship was sinking that would be great
Let's pray for some lost jobs, yes.
Oh come on, not even a change of managment stopped the company being fucking awful, there is no hope for them.
If 'no hope' means $11 billion quarterly profit, $110 billion in cash reserves then I'd like me some of that no hope
working retail blows.
Depends on the retailer and what kind of dosh you need to make in a year.
Microsoft turned quite a profit in the late 90's, that definately does not make them a good company.
They're still turning quite some profits. No one cares if it's a good or bad company, it's all about the money.
This far into the comments and only one about the Olympics?
C'mon guys, head in the game.
- Apple ramps up staff for London Olympics (documented)
- Olympics end
- Apple lays off significant staff at "Certain UK Stores"
MY GOD. IF I COULD ONLY. FIND. THE CONNECTION. HERE.
From macrumors, seems legit.

Everyday I wake up, and I look at my Steve Jobs poster, cursing his name and stroking his face, hoping that he'll suffer in his hellish pit. Then I'll log on to my email and forward my daily "WHY APPLE IS BAD" essay to all my friends.
They tell me to let it go, but of course they wouldn't understand. When they see Apple they just see a corporation, but I see something different. I see a dark hollow pit that makes me ill in the pit of my stomach. Sometimes it'll be so bad I have to cause pain to myself, purification of the strains of Apple. I'll gag myself and scream as I give myself the wonderful pleasure of pain.
Oh what's this? A Facepunch article about Apple layoffs? Something is bubbling in the pit of my stomach. Must I? I must.
Every shiver of Apple hatred spurns my bowels and rocks my very core as I type my very words.
"If the apple ship was sinking that would be great".
As soon as I ended my sentence I fell over, basking in my almost orgasmic after-glow. I had done enough today, but the demon in me lives throughout the days. The affliction need only 24 hours to return. Forgive me.

I imagined him jizzing everywhere after he hit post ahahahaha you are a funny guy
I'd love an apple store in Brisbane, everywhere I go is only certified sellers not a big apple house. Apple products are neat, I love the design and the OS but the price is high for they sell. I understand apple is a huge patient troll but honestly what they make has changed the industry in some way. -- Without the iPhone, the standard for touch screen phones would be really different, same goes for tablets, don't deny it, it'd take us a while to get to now without them.
According to a friend who works there, the management is changing everything to be more cold and corporate. The store he had has had it's manager replaced with someone 'highly qualified with years of experience managing a sears' who has so far accused everyone who's made a mistake of being against the company and attempted to fire someone for mistakenly swapping a phone which was barely out of warranty.

My phone carrier does that, my lumia had calibration issues, but I was covered and got a new phone with no extra cost, it's a wonderful system

Oh wow, he used to run the Dixons group (Currys, PC World)? Yeah, he's going to run this shit into the ground.
They're obviously going to replace the employees with prototypes of retail robots.

Yeah, we'd be a lot further down the line because we wouldn't have to deal with being sued over things being square.

You use a design because it's functional. It's not 'stealing a piece of cake,' it's the proliferation of ideas and knowledge. They should not be allowed to be the only manufacturer of that design of phone when someone else should be allowed to compete (like in capitalism) and attempt to do it better.

except that they are only suing Samsung over design, and not HTC, Motorola, ZTE, Asus, Nokia, Acer, Dell and all other Android phone makers.

Do you know how many families would be ruined? How many lost jobs?
Hate the decision makers all you want but wishing for such a big company to sink is stupid.

Design architecture also known as beveled edges, square shape with rounded corners and a glass screen. Totally legit patents bro. If we're playing the cake game, I may as well patent chocolate cake, because I don't want other shitty companies trying to muscle in on my obviously superior chocolate cake sales.

If they are able to patent stupid stuff like that they will, or else other big company will. If it wasn't Apple, it would be Samsung, Google or any other major corporation.
What's stupid is the ability to patent stupid stuff like that in the first place, it's not only Apple (they do have some rather money hungry lawyers though).
And worse than that it's how software patents are handled.
