So the computer I have right now is REALLY, really bad. I'm always asking to get a new computer but what my dad is thinking is that I download "too much stuff". I only have 160 GB of 288 GB on my hard drive, and he says that I am not going to get a new one (pre-built) for b-day. I keep telling him that it is the specs inside the machine that are making it slow, but he just wants to ignore me and go to my "super-techy" brother instead. What should I do?
post specs so we can criticize the computer

deal with it?
if you're a minor getting it as a gift, you don't really get to choose what you're getting
Just deal with it. If your dad is dead set on saying "its fine" then your not getting anything. Wait until your old enough to be able to buy upgrades on your own. I was largely using a Pentium III for that reason well into 2010. Maybe ask family and friends if they have any old PCs laying around?
starting saving up money
Yard.
Mower.
Cash.
Save up and stop relying on your parents. Problem solved.

b-but free money
job.
Also there is some you can do to make your PC a bit faster, such as optimizing windows, removing startup programs, etc. but there's a limit to how much you'll squeeze out of it.
A friend of mine was stuck with his old computer for a while, and it really started to show up.
Came with the suggestion to overclock the GPU and CPU a bit, to squeeze some better performance out of it but keep it stable.
You could try that if your power supply can handle it, and your temperatures remain stable.
I got a summer job when I was 16 years old, used the money to build my first gaming PC.

last time i messed with a compaq it was actually fairly customizable besides the motherboard (and it was a budget machine, which was weird with the fact it had a fucking PCI-E slot on it), but since most OEM machines nowadays are the most budget things you can find nowadays, I don't think it would be much on the upgradeable side, probably no PCI-E slot, PSU probably not a standard shape, and other stuff, I would do research to see if the machine is atleast upgradeable before you try to get a custom build.

I work on those machines quite alot, they're pretty darn flexible, standard ATX PSU, and a half decent one at that, micro atx board, fairly spacey.

it actually does have a pci-e x16 slot.
you can upgrade your ram to a maximum of 4gb. and if you really want upgrade it a little mroe, you can actually throw in a quad core cpu.

If it was me, and I HAD to make do with this computer, I'd look into:
1.Add memory until you get to 4gb, this will perk everything up in general
2.Look into a cheap SSD, 120-128gb size. This is for your OS and key programs, NOT personal files such as video or music.
3.Stop the automatic loading of programs when Windows boots up. I use Autoruns for this. You can still have programs installed, so you can run them when you need them, you just don't want anything running automatically unless it's absolutely necessary.
Be realistic. With a CPU like that you are going to be limited in games you can play. I do not believe a videocard upgrade is advisable until after you've upgraded the CPU(assuming you do).
what do you download exactly op? :v:
OP, if your dad is going to your tech brother (is he actually techy? How old are both of you?), then try to get your brother on your side. If that fails, show him the research you put into looking up how much better a new computer would be for you and/or your family. Seriously, 2.7GHz single core and a 6150?
The idea is to show your dad that you've put a lot of effort and thought into this. Hell, that's what I did when I was sort of in a not-so-similar situation, tldr: my dad wanted me to get a costco computer. I was like fuck that.
This is assuming of course that money is not really an issue in your family. If it is, you selfish bastard.

SSDs are cheaper now, but I wouldn't throw a 128GB SSD at that machine - it's not worth it at all.
I think OP's best option would be to get a decent, cheap GPU (assuming he's gaming), format and reinstall Windows if he's having performance problems. The Sempron sucks donkey dick, but his GPU sucks even more.

An SSd is a massive waste of money if op want to game on this. It doesnt make the game run any faster.
OP:You are pretty much fucked with this PC, You need a new CPU, GPU RAM and probably PSU. At this point you are almost at a new computer anyway.
If you ever do get the money(Or your dad chimes in) dont go to a store and let them advise you a random pc. Ask here with the budget and games you want to play, and let us pick one out for you.
When a salesmen knows you are not tech savvy they will usually:
1:Not know what they are talking about either.
2:Sell you some old shitty thing they really need to get rid off.
3:Sell you the PC with the higest markup.
This is especially prevalent in big hardware chains and warehouses.

Get a job. Mow lawns like a dirty little mexican.
Clean up tree's. LEARN TO RUN EQUIPMENT
Better start saving before you have to move out.
Know your facts. Write something up and approach your dad woth logical reasons why you want a better a computer and why you feel you deserve it.
so, i'm still running on a pc from 2007 (only PSU,CPU and the hard drive survived, the rest was replaced over the years)
