those fires are about to get liberated
I'm apart of 3rd MAW, however I'm attached to MALS-13 out of Yuma, pretty cool to see 3rd MAW helping out.

Did MAW help because they're fire protection or just because they had the equipment to help?

I'm not sure, like I said, I'm stationed at MCAS Yuma, about two and a half hours from San Diego, Far enough, and in the opposite direction of the winds that we don't see or smell anything. My guess is it's because VMM-163 has CH-46s, V-22 Ospreys, Hueys, and CH-53s, attached to them. Both are capable of sling loads (The massive "bags" of water) that you saw they were dumping below.
3rd MAW isn't a fire fighting unit in itself, it's a war fighting unit. Just sometimes equipment can pull other duties not always originally thought of.
If anyone wants more information on it, here's a link that describes what aircraft were used, how many gallons of water transported, etc, as well as pictures and some videos I believe.

Wouldn't this also provide good training opportunities.

It could depending on it, some squadrons and supporting squadrons not so much, others yes.
