Facebook removes fan pages glorifying California mass shooter
After Elliot Rodger went on a rampage Friday, killing six people and himself, fan pages glorifying the 22-year-old Californian sprung up on Facebook.
The social networking site has removed the pages, some as early as Sunday morning. But even as Facebook took down controversial pages, new ones popped up, illustrating the challenges websites face in monitoring hate speech.
Although sites such as Facebook and YouTube try to create a community with civil, respectful discourse, they are "often outpaced" by the amount of content constantly posted, said Danielle Citron, a professor at the University of Maryland's School of Law and author of the book Hate Crimes in Cyberspace, in an interview with USA TODAY Network.
The Facebook fan pages, including one titled "Elliot Rodger is an American hero," praise the killer. Facebook had taken down the "American hero" fan page, but another version of the page emerged Tuesday, which was taken down hours later.
Anonymity on the Internet often brings out the worst in some people, I'm afraid. Literally nothing to be done about that unless the entire world somehow does 180 in terms of behavior.
I liked the time when freedom of speech worked both ways....oh wait, there never was a time like that. I don't have a lot of knowlage of these pages, but it seems to me, that they are just pages that are humoring the man and attempting to be funny and people that don't like dark humor are jumping in and complaining. Everyone just seems to forget that you can just not view them and ignore them and let people do what they got to do. I am not saying that I am fond of the pages, but I just tend to ignore stupid shit like this and never have a problem with it.
If you allow stupid shit to perpetuate, you're going to see a lot more stupid shit down the line, better to nip it in the bud and be done with it the first time.

Freedom of speech stops the government from prosecuting you. Private companies can still exercise their right to stop you from using their service.

I want to criticize them more on the level of their supporting his cause.
Once upon a time, James Holmes and the Aurora shooting were fresh in our mind, and some were appalled by James Holmes fan pages on Tumblr and the like. That was dark humor. That was attention seeking at worst. But with this politically motivated shooting, there's something frightening and new, which is that there are people who identify with his feelings and actually support him for them.
It goes above and beyond dark humor or attention seeking.

a common misconception about 'freedom of speech' is that it means 'anyone can say anything with no consequences'
when, in fact, it means basically 'the government cannot imprison you for things you've said'
having a facebook page taken down for hate speech does not violate freedom of speech because facebook is a privately owned company and has the rights to dictate the content that appears on their page

I just don't see it as a huge problem. Shit like this will ALWAYS be posted and always is, no matter what. It is the internet, you can't possibly stop it from happening. The only reason that people are actualy talking about these ones is because the recent event is still trending. If these were to float up in a few weeks or a month no one would have cared this much. Most people would just ignore them and go on with their lives just like any other stupid page.

I am not disagreeing with their decision to take them down, as they can do whatever they want, but as it says in the OP they are having a hard time monitoring and deleting these pages and in my opinion it is just not worth the effort and time to delete something that will just die on it's own in a few days.

You can say this about anything that goes against Facebook's guidelines - the shooter example is only specifically in question because it's prominent at this moment. You'd need to ask the company to rethink their entire policy on a whole array of nasty subjects.

To be fair I was looking at this from a narrow point of view and didn't even think about the companies policies and their image as a whole. In fact I shouldn't even be talking as I don't know anything about facebook and don't even have an account there, so I have no idea how things work there and how public these pages are. Sorry about that.

The problem isn't with Anonymity, it's partial Anonymity. With my username, nobody knows who I am. I could say "Down with black people, fuck the gays, nigger nigger nigger" and worst case scenario I get banned or whatnot. But I'd be stroking my E-Penis.
Total Anonymity means no matter what you say, you never get any more popular.

On the contrary, people probably make these pages because they know the reaction they will receive.

You are disrespecting the dead and hurting the families and friends of the victims. Freedom of speech is not an absolute freedom and may be subject to restrictions when it starts to affect others in a negative way.
I can sum up my thoughts on these pages in 3 simple words.
Fuck these people.
Seriously, how can you PRAISE his actions? Seven fucking people are dead because of him! Troll pages or not, I'm glad they were taken down.
There's someone on my steam friends list who's alias is "Elliot Rodgers is my hero"
seems pretty troll-y
