2015 was a milestone year for the technology realm. Both eBay and Amazon ditched their teenager tags and celebrated 20 years in business, while IMDb turned 25. Elsewhere, the humble .com domain name reached 30 years of age, as the first “dotcom” domain was registered in March, 1985.
However, 1985 was a notable year for something else: Microsoft’s efforts to bring a 16-bit graphical user interface (GUI) to the consumer realm was realized. Though its origins can be traced back to 1981 under a project called “Interface Manager,” the Windows brand was announced in 1983, and the final Windows 1.0 arrived in November 20, 1985, — 30 years ago today.
The main selling-point of Windows was that it promised an alternative to MS-DOS commands (though it was still MS-DOS based) — it offered a more natural, user-friendly interface that let you point-and-click with a mouse. It also had drop-down menus, dialog boxes, scroll bars, and other tools that would become familiar to millions of people globally.
The first incarnation of Windows also had some notable programs built-in — Paint, Notepad (I still use this), Calculator (and this), and a host of other useful tools such as a clock, and a game called Reversi.
Damn time flies.
Was thinking of, like, actual windows and had to doubt the thread title.
The company I work for had a 30 year anniversary this year. Good times!
This only makes me think how much computers changed in 90's.

Sadly, instead of actually being exited about new versions windows, I now actively have to prevent Microsoft from shoving their shitty, spyware laden "update" down my throat. Windows 95 >> Windows 10.

Dude, Point 1. They are not spying on you, literally everyone these days are calling "tracking OS operations" Spying when tracking the OS is needed to fix bugs and or software BSOD's that happen on the windows OS, Imagine the point when even Windows 7 had this shit, but no one even cared about it, yet it did, and as i said, NO ONE cared about that, this is basically the same shit on Windows 10, but advanced because its on a newer OS. So stop saying that they put spyware on your computer when not even the big virus companys can detect a single spyware virus on your computer.

So? Windows' kernel IS shitty, but the people who actually care about that stuff are in the minority.

I don't know about home editions, but the Windows Server 2016 will have an SSH server, supposedly. At least, they've removed telnet server and client, and have prepared for the SSH server, although last I checked it wasn't in yet.

I still much prefer the classic UI, it was extremely tidy without any of the screaming and dancing from XP/Vista/7
As do I, which is why my W7 desktop looks 95% like a Windows 98SE desktop.
Can't wait for this to happen:
