Disney wished to create a new character, which he himself owned. In 1928, Disney asked animator Ub Iwerks to start drawing up character ideas, but sketches of various animals were drawn and rejected. Disney got the inspiration for Mickey Mouse from his old pet mouse he used to have on his farm. Back in 1925, another animator, Hugh Harman, had drawn some sketches of mice around a photograph of Walt Disney. These pictures then inspired Iwerks to create a new mouse character called ‘Mortimer Mouse’. Disney's wife, however, convinced him to change it, and ultimately Mickey Mouse was born. After secretly begin animating a new cartoon while still under contract with Universal, Disney and Iwerks made the cartoon short Plane Crazy, which failed to impress the audience. Steamboat Willie, first released on November 18, 1928 in New York was the first to find a distributor, and thus is considered by The Disney Company as Mickey's debut. Since then, the world has grown to love the mischievous mouse. His red pants, white gloves, yellow shoes and wide eyes have become iconic. The silhouette of his ears perched on a round face has become synonymous with the Disney brand, as has the high-pitched voice, originally done by Disney himself. Over the years, he collected many friends including girlfriend Minnie Mouse (originally Minerva), Donald Duck, introduced in the Silly Symphonies, Horace Horsecollar first appearing in The Plow Boy in 1929, Goofy, who broke through in 1932 with Mickey's Revue, and his lovable and silly dog, Pluto, who was originally Minnie Mouse's dog Rover in the 1930 film The Picnic. There are also peripheral characters such as Daisy Duck and Clarabelle Cow who complete the Disney world of Mickey Mouse. Since his inception, Mickey has been used as a political figure, a kind of an ambassador of The United States reaching out to children, has received nine Academy Award nominations, and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 1932, Walt Disney received an honorary Academy Award in recognition of Mickey's creation and popularity. Today, his 83rd birthday, he is celebrated by thousands, including celebrities brought to fame byThe Mickey Mouse Club like Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling.
Happy Birthday, Mickey! I just realized, I haven't completed Epic Mickey yet. Gotta finish that game soon.
Too bad Disney is nothing compared to what it was 83 years ago.
Too bad Disney is nothing compared to what it was 83 years ago.
True, but I hope they're going back to what they were at least a little; the Princess and the Frog was a step in the right direction.
Poor Mickey
Too bad Disney is nothing compared to what it was 83 years ago.
Well yeah he was still alive back then
Donald Duck is where it's at.
Well yeah he was still alive back then
Not going to lie, Disney is shit compared to what it was even 10 or so years ago. The shows they have airing now have actual jokes about rape, sex, condoms, and some other things like that. (One of the shows with the chick in New York) I mean, it's not bad, but certainly not stuff that you show to 9 year olds. When I was younger, Disney had all cartoons on its channels, and was coming out with the nice 90s movies, now it's all live-action and sex jokes. And people ask why kids call eachother "slut" in primary.
Too bad Disney is nothing compared to what it was 83 years ago.
Same with everything else.
Here's to another 83 years of extending the timeframe of copyright laws.
