The government agency that oversees Australia's Great Barrier Reef on Friday approved a plan to dump vast swathes of sediment on the reef as part of a major coal port expansion — a decision that environmentalists say will endanger one of the world's most fragile ecosystems.
The federal government in December approved the expansion of the Abbot Point coal port in northern Queensland, which requires a massive dredging operation to make way for ships entering and exiting the port. About 3 million cubic meters (106 million cubic feet) of dredged mud will be dumped within the marine park under the plan.
Environment Minister Greg Hunt has vowed that "some of the strictest conditions in Australian history" will be in place to protect the reef from harm, including water quality measures and safeguards for the reef's plants and animals.
But outraged conservationists say the already fragile reef will be gravely threatened by the dredging, which will occur over a 184-hectare (455-acre) area. Apart from the risk that the sediment will smother coral and seagrass, the increased shipping traffic will boost the risk of accidents, such as oil spills and collisions with delicate coral beds, environment groups argue.
Your safety measures will do an excellent job of protecting the skeletons of the coral reefs and sea life that lives among them.
You'd do better to find another place to dump your crap.

Here's a good safety measure: Don't dump shit on top of the reefs in the first place
I'm not sure what to think of this, I doubt it would have happened without Abbott in power.
This is so ridiculous. Why are the governments giving up/destroying our natural resources and habitats? It's upsetting the equilibrium of this planet.
Why don't they just dump it in the desert or something?
I really hope nature creatures a super virus that's so powerful, it annihilates our population before we have the chance to cure it.
We are the worst organism on the planet.

The current government don't care about the environment, they were voted in because of people's economy worries. Our PM is a notorious idiot whom most people hate. But yeah they're in, and protests and letters won't stop shit like this any more than posts on a random forum.
Why don't they just dump it in the desert or something?
It would cost money. They're fucking up the environment in various ways in order to make money from mining. Obviously the compromise would be don't mine if it's going to fuck things up but that kind of hyperbole doesn't make any difference to them

So I deserve to die because of the actions of a group of dumb cunts?
Solid logic.
This government is irreparably fucking us..
I knew it would be bad when they were voted in, but I didn't realize it would be this bad.
First shark culling, now dumping shit into the great barrier reef. RIP australian ecosystem

PROFITTTTTTT
They're spoiling a world wonder -- a natural one at that!

I hope they realize that if the great barrier reef gets destroyed that they'll be out of a job.
Also why the reef of all places? Can't you dump it somewhere in the ocean that isn't inhabited by millions of fish?

I don't get it. Why not just dump it somewhere other than the reef? There's plenty of ocean out there. Why pick this place in particular?

Well, unluckily for you, the most successful parasites are highly adaptable.
Guess what we are? :)

Probably because they're doing their best impression of a Captain Planet villian.

Because they're too damn lazy and cheap to do it any other way.
One word. Money.
I wonder where they're going to dump it exactly?

You do realize that a virus capable of wiping out the entire human population would also wipe out the majority of animal and plant life on the planet and turn us into a dead world, right?

Not necessarily. Viruses can be quite innocuous in one creature, but a killer in a different species.
