Google to block Flash on Chrome, only 10 websites exempt
The inexorable slide into a world without Flash continues, with Google revealing plans to phase out support for Adobe's Flash Player in its Chrome browser for all but a handful of websites. And the company expects the changes to roll out by the fourth quarter of 2016.
While it says Flash might have "historically" been a good way to present rich media online, Google is now much more partial to HTML5, thanks to faster load times and lower power use.
As a result, Flash will still come bundled with Chrome, but "its presence will not be advertised by default." Where the Flash Player is the only option for viewing content on a site, users will need to
actively switch it on for individual sites. Enterprise Chrome users will also have the option of switching Flash off altogether.
Google will maintain support in the short-term for the top 10 domains using the player, including YouTube, Facebook, Yahoo, Twitch and Amazon. But this "whitelist" is set to be periodically reviewed,
with sites removed if they no longer warrant an exception, and the exemption list will expire after a year.
I wonder just how much internet history will become inaccessible when Flash is completely phased out.
Are there any decent tools comparable to Adobe Flash for creating tools and games in HTML5?
Because that's the only reason why I still use Flash - Adobe has some pretty damn convenient tools for it. If similar tools exist for HTML5, then I'm all for jumping ship.

Yup, Adobe is still a big standard in animated web content. They're just abandoning the old Flash format.
Have we finally seen the death of shitty flash based websites then?
Now begins the uprise of shitty HMTL5 based websites!
Damn, if only they didn't put twitch on that list, it would force them to fully do HTML5, now for that to even be a thing we have to wait a year
Now begins the uprise of shitty HMTL5 based websites!
Yeah this is basically what's coming next. We're seeing more and more websites adding loading spinners to get to the main page because of all the junk their site needs to show you their static content. Shit flies in and pops out for no reason. Parallax backgrounds. Autoplaying videos.
Zombocom better be on that fucking list.
Zombocom better be on that fucking list.
NOPE
Still up

You can still download local flash players and play swf from there. God knows Adobe will come up with some fucking bullshit to force archaic technology somehow

Adobe is trying to get people to switch/convert old content to HTML5 like everyone else.
That won't help with the really old content on sites like kongregate or newgrounds. All that content doesn't deserve to just be forgotten about. This is bullshit and should be optional.

I believe both UE4 and unity can export HTML5 for creating browser games

You won't lose the ability to play flash content and you never will at all, when flash finally gets the boot for good, legacy content can still be played through old browsers with flash plugins
old content can also be downloaded and played in numerous 3rd party standalone SWF players as well. So retro newgrounds, kongregate, albino black sheep and homestar running can still be played
most of the old movies that were created in flash have been converted into HTML5 format or exist on YouTube, so the archival process has been underway for years now

That's not the fault of html5 though, that's the fault of their shitty design and/or bad clientside programming.
[editline]18th May 2016[/editline]
Have you forgotten all those shitty websites made completely in flash? It wasnt flash's fault they were shit.
Now begins the uprise of shitty HMTL5 based websites!
Begins? Where have you been? Also, html 5 is objectively better than Flash in literally every category. Except for "ability to run flash" I guess. But nothing about html 5 could possibly encourage poorly designed websites, blame that on WebDevs and trends. That's like blaming a hammer for someone building an ugly piece of furniture.

I have heard good things about Phaser, haven't used it personally. As stated, both Unreal and Unity export to html5, but depend on the still somewhat unstable and limited state of webGL. This is changing very fast too.
pandora will finally switch to an HTML5 site that doesn't lockup every time an ad plays then?
because their ads are like in flash or something, while parts of the site aren't and its fucking annoying
I'm pretty sure the article I read said that you can re-enable it on websites by choice, but it will be blocked by default.

They were not knocking HTML5 by any means. Everyone knows flash is dated as fuck. It just so happens a ton of shitty websites are in flash which will now be transferred to HTML5
It's a steady push towards html5 and https 2 (soon).
I'd consider these, just for the sole reason of privacy & security for the user.
But again, I use 4 browsers... Chrome ain't my main go-to-browser.
Oh google, how about making it so your own play music service doesn't use flash before doing something like this?
What's the betting that's on the whitelist
Now for all the people talking about how obsolete flash is and how hip they are for dumping it years ago.
For nostalgia's sake i wanted to play this really old flash game, took me 2 hours to make it work...
I wonder just how much internet history will become inaccessible when Flash is completely phased out.
Probably not a lot, since there's work underway (and has been for a long time) to make flash playable without any plugins using things like asm.js.
[editline]18th May 2016[/editline]
Oh and obviously really old flash material doesn't even work today anyway.
Flash emulator?

Its had a HTML5 player component for years now (albeit buggy), I don't know why they haven't been developing it to make it the primary one and stable.
