Georgia congressman John Lewis deployed a strategy from his days as a civil rights activist and coupled it with social media to stage a dramatic sit-in Wednesday on the House floor with his fellow Democrats to force a vote on gun control.

"Sometimes you have to do something out of the ordinary, sometimes you have to make a way out of no way," said Lewis, one of the last living icons of the civil rights movement. "There comes a time when you have to say something, when you have to make a little noise, when you have to move your feet. This is the time. Now is the time to get in the way. The time to act is now. We will be silent no more."

Lewis and roughly 40 fellow House Democrats began by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance as a couple dozen visitors in the gallery looked on and vowing "to occupy the floor of the House until there is action."

Other Democrats began chanting: "I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired!" and "No bill, no break!"
Its a developing scenario right now, so I'll post info as it comes it. Feel free to post good info if you find it.
Already posted earlier iirc

I love how energized they all are. These people grew up doing these protests in colleges and parks to force positive change, and became famous and important politicians; they are channeling that same energy now.
I bet they feel young, like themselves again after years of political paralysis.
I'm not sure this will work but this is definitely a night to be remembered.

Fucking hypocrites, there were TWO bills from the other party you could have worked with and you shot them down.
What I'm telling my representatives is, "no more gun control." Because NONE of the proposed laws would have stopped Orlando.
The only change I support is repealing gun-free zones (that are not enforced by metal detectors and armed officers). Because even this latest shooting happened in a gun-free zone.
You ever feel like old shits trying to relive their glory days getting in the way of getting shit done? That's what this feels like.

Interesting, because I see it as political theater. They are doing literally nothing to further the discussion or provide solutions. All they're doing is trying to make themselves look good.

John Lewis in particular reliving the glory days of having his skull fractured while getting in the way of police breaking up a peaceful protest against segregation.

These are Democrats in the House and those bills were rejected by Democrats in the Senate, not the House.

Any place where there are lots of drunk people together, such as a nightclub (which is also dark and a cramped, noisy environment), ought to be a gun-free zone.

You do realize people get drunk elsewhere (that isn't a gun-free zone) and we don't seem to have any issue there. Generally, if someone is going to be responsible they will be, regardless of laws. A law doesn't change someone's thinking.
Also, there are states where bars are not gun-free zone. No issues there either.

It's in the eye of the beholder I guess. Opinions on the validity, justification, and effectiveness of a protest is mostly divided along what one thinks of the issue at hand. I've been ineffectively arguing for gun control for years so I guess I'm more likely to support this protest, despite my attempts to appreciate it from a neutral standpoint as well.
Would you guys at least agree that it's too difficult to get a vote on a bill?

It is kind of that like I said. A lot of these people, like John Lewis, started their careers that way. They seem a lot younger now than they have for years.

Have they even introduced a bill to be voted on? I haven't heard of one yet, I'd like to take a read to how it would differ from the Senate ones.
Pretty sure the amendment they introduced failed in committee. I feel like the committee system is an unnecessary check in the way it eats up amendments and bills, both ones I like and ones I don't like.

And once again, it's probably the same thing as the Senate one.
If it failed in committee, then I'm pretty certain they're failing to protest the correct thing.
Also the committee system is pretty necessary to the government as it cleans out a lot of unnecessary bills and helps create (sometimes) a bipartisan bill more susceptible to both sides during an actual vote.
Nothing would get done in Congress if they literally had to have a vote on every single piece of law introduced by every Congressman.
