http://www.engadget.com/2014/09/14/sidewalk-lane-china/
Some places have lanes for bicycles, others for motorcycles, but there's a place in mainland China that boasts a different type of lane altogether: one for phone addicts glued to their screens. According to a Chinese publication, the cellphone lane above was spotted along a place called Foreigner Street in Chongqing city, one of the five major cities in the country. The sidewalk was most likely painted on for everyone's safety, because, hey, if there's distracted driving, there's also distracted walking, as perfectly demonstrated by the woman in this video. If the idea sounds familiar, it's because the National Geographic did something similar back in July as an experiment. The society stenciled "NO CELLPHONES" on one-half of a DC sidewalk and "CELLPHONES: WALK IN THIS LANE AT YOUR OWN RISK" on the other half. The result? Well, among other things, they found that the people actually glued to their phones didn't even notice the markings at all. Typical.
[T]http://o.aolcdn.com/hss/storage/midas/e2340746765ee938a7e8b94415b7ab58/200749138/chinese-phone-lane.jpg[/T] [T]https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BxYPyHQCMAAjPy2.jpg[/T]
That's actually pretty genius they should have them in the UK sometimes people walk like 1mph on their phones blocking everything
I don't think we should encourage people to be further withdrawn from reality/direct social contact
I don't think we should encourage people to be further withdrawn from reality/direct social contact
i think people are already too far gone, id rather have them out of the way so i dont have to wait 20 minutes to walk down a city block
I don't think we should encourage people to be further withdrawn from reality/direct social contact
If they can't prevent it, they compensate for it.
ohgod its the walking dead, no wait just a sidewalk full of smartphone zombies [editline]15th September 2014[/editline] i wonder if there's a police guy sitting there to yell at people who use a smartphone in the other sidewalk "but i was just checking the time" "no you get over there in that sidewalk!"
I don't think we should encourage people to be further withdrawn from reality/direct social contact
yes stopping people talking to their friends indirectly should be at the top of our priorities
I don't think we should encourage people to be further withdrawn from reality/direct social contact
If you're walking somewhere alone and texting someone using your smartphone you're definitely not being withdrawn from social contact.
I don't think we should encourage people to be further withdrawn from reality/direct social contact
But they might miss an important tweet
There is a road for people like these already, it is called highway, you will not be missed.
I don't think we should encourage people to be further withdrawn from reality/direct social contact
whatever grandma [editline]e[/editline] weren't these things done as a social experiment in new york or somewhere in the UK? I remember some people found the novelty funny, others didn't give a rat's ass and walked headlong into other people with their phone out in the middle of the no-phone-lane
That's actually pretty genius they should have them in the UK sometimes people walk like 1mph on their phones blocking everything
Worst part about getting around on campus, right here. I hate being stuck behind some idiot turtling along while they tap on their phone.
Why are so many people here upset over something that does not affect them at all? Sidewalk for people who are texting on foot so they don't get in your way? How horrible, put them on a highway.
Smartphone highway the future is here gentlemen
I don't understand the highway comment don't text on the road dude
Why are so many people here upset over something that does not affect them at all? Sidewalk for people who are texting on foot so they don't get in your way? Let's divide all roads in half so people who text and drive can have their own road. But opinions I guess.
Smartphone highway the future is here gentlemen
the information superhighway
Well it's not like ignoring people while walking is a recent thing. first it was books/newspapers, then walkmans, then mp3 players now smartphones In the future it'll be some weird mass effect style omni-tool. this is nothing new
Sadly annoying people are just going to bloodclot it remember that in highschool? Bunch of noisy mancunts hoarding a locker and taking MORE than half the hallway
I don't think we should encourage people to be further withdrawn from reality/direct social contact
"technology is spooky and im afraid it'll make people zombies like they say on the fox news " People said the same thing of TV, Radio and newspapers. The whole notion that somehow the world is being turned into walking zombies by smartphones is sensationalist nonsense. People on their smartphones aren't starring into a void of white noise, they're texting their friends, chatting on facebook or updating their social media pages. If anything, the world is more social then it has EVER been. The fear of technology making "direct social contact" obsolete is fucking absurd. Humans will always have, and fulfill the need to meet and engage socially in person, and smartphones make this easier, while also making it easier for otherwise unsociable people to socialize on the net.

Distracted walkers lane is a really good idea. Sometimes I walk down a lane and I recall I got mails to check on my phone, or a tiny print to read at the back of a bank prospectus, or I need to get the bus info, or maybe I'm reading my nondescript newspaper/sh. Maybe we could have a "way distracted walkers lane" that takes you through the park and outside of town and goes through all kinds of hoops and loops and tunnels and shit, that would be the best. How about a mr bones edition distracted walkers lane, for people who need to text their gf while walking?
I don't think we should encourage people to be further withdrawn from reality/direct social contact
Oh there's the obligatory antisocial behaviour apologist. While you're at it, would you also like to tell us about your "small circle of close friends" and how that makes you better than those with 500 Facebook friends?
great place to mug people
So when will driving get a phone lane? But seriously, I don't really see the point in this.
