A Mississippi school is shedding the name of the Confederacy’s only president and will instead be named for the first African-American president of the United States.
Davis International Baccalaureate Elementary School in Jackson was named decades ago for Jefferson Davis.
In a move proposed by parents, the school with 98 percent African-American enrollment will be renamed for Barack Obama in the next academic year. The PTA president announced the planned change at a school board meeting Tuesday.
State rankings show the magnet school is the top academic performer of all elementary and middle schools in Mississippi.
Hard to think of a more effective way of shitting on the Confederacy
I swear if I hear something about someone in a position of political power flipping their lid about this..

It's fine, Trump already has his own """""University"""""
Aww this is nice.
How long before El Grande Orange chimes in to ruin it?
Nice!
There's a high school nearby that was named after Lee and there was a huge outcry to change it.
...So they changed it to LEE (Legacy of Educational Excellence) High School.
Which.... I guess works??? Technically?
This one seems like a better idea lol.

The school's block is gerrymandered out of America and sold to France

Lmfao these high school girls really care about their school no longer being named after Robert E Lee. What a normal country we live in.
"If we don't have a good number of schools named after generals who fought against the United States of America, we might forget the Civil War happened altogether!! School names and statues are the only things keep us from forgetting our entire history."

The controversial part is that they will also be replacing the names of all historical figures in ALL textbooks with "Barack Obama", this will include poor photoshops of any historical photographs

It's even funnier because Lee himself was opposed to memorialization.
Christ these people are absolute morons.

I'm not sure you can really compare the two. Statues are generally erected with the purpose of commemorating a historical event or the life of a famous person, while schools are not. Some of our only knowledge of ancient civilisations comes from art like statues. I think the reason people like to dispose of statues is because they feel shame towards their history and the statues are an uncomfortable reminder of it. And sure, no one is going to forget the civil war any time soon, but it's easier to bury it in the past when there are less reminders of it. Here in Australia, opposite our Parliament House in Canberra is the Australian War Memorial, which was intentionally built there to remind politicians of the consequences of their decisions in sending our nation to war. I think with the statue debate in the US, certainly statues glorifying the war should be removed through the proper channels, but those which serve to commemorate it should not.

Well after the chaos Obama caused in europe in the 40s, what did you think would happen? That -Obama- would be running against him? Psht, even Obama would have been better than that monster

I think one the best remaining suggestions for a school was called it it.
Robert Elementary School.
Now waiting for far-right snowflakes to complain about it. I know they will.

A lot of them cheer anything that causes "libtards" to throw a fit, so I guess the shoe is on the other foot now.
Can someone tell America that naming schools after generals and war heroes is what Yugoslavia did during socialism? Maybe that'll trigger a few people.
Is this name chance stuff thing elsewere? Cause in Finland we have child protection service named after field marshall Mannerheim and he was working whit Hitler and hitler even visited him on his birthday

Okay so I'm an actual historian right, and this is bullshit. 95% of historical sources are entirely made up of statues from the 1930's and school names (The last 5% are decommissioned soviet fighter jets). If you change or remove them, you are literally removing the very thing history is. The past will not only be forgotten, it will cease to exist entirely.
