"Tonight is about Flickr," Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer said at an event in New York City Monday evening. "It is about that other 'R' brand and how we can make Flickr awesome again."
To that end, Yahoo announced three main changes to Flickr: a cleaner design, a new Android app and much more storage space than any competing photo service offers.
The new design scraps all the white space and blue links for large photos. Every user profile has a full-lead image or a cover photo, and below that a user's large photos are displayed in a grid. When users visit other profiles, they will see the same layout. There's also a photo stream page, which will bring in photos from people you follow.
Those big photos are a crucial part to the new parts of the service, Mayer and SVP of Mobile Products Adam Cahan said this evening. Those photos are uploaded in full resolution. "We never want you to compromise a single pixel at Flickr," Cahan said from the stage.
Soon Yahoo will own all the sites that remove the last vowel in the title.
How the fuck can you offer a terabyte of free image storage in the cloud?
i am struggling to make sense out of this
How the fuck can you offer a terabyte of free image storage in the cloud?
Probably because they know only a very small percentage will actually upload 1TB worth of images.
How the fuck can you offer a terabyte of free image storage in the cloud?
They're hoping that every user won't actually ever use 1tb of space.
How the fuck can you offer a terabyte of free image storage in the cloud?
All my computer files could fit on a 1Tb HDD.
No way in hell someone uploading photos can touch 1Tb
Probably because they know only a very small percentage will actually upload 1TB worth of images.
Even if only a thousand people use it to it's full potential, that's still a fucking exabyte of data.
Maybe i'm over reacting, or underestimating Yahoo, but that seems pretty crazy to me.
Someone should post a screencap of the "size exceeded" error message
Fuck yeah.
1TB of storage? Challenge accepted.
If Yahoo can keep this up maybe they'll become relevant again. Good on you, Marissa.
How the fuck can you offer a terabyte of free image storage in my butt?
It's threads like these that make the Cloud to Butt extension totally worth it.
you please the tiny minority of people who upload super hires images and the majority of people who don't are still given big old boners over 1tb of space
pretty good idea
A whole terabyte of storage space? If this is correct then that's more then my hard-drive's storage space :v: .
would it be possible to zip a folder up, change the extension to jpg and upload it or am i stupid

Not large enough.
use stenography to hide all of your porn inside your images
upload

you'd still have to upload it though
uploading 1tb of data is not fun
at all
So does Flickr offer the same thing as Photobucket?
you'd still have to upload it though

Even with Google fiber, it'd still take you a few hours

I wouldn't upload a terabyte file, but this could be useful for backups if you can cheat the system
what a tiny limit
that will barely fit even a fraction of my collection of fetish pornography
the internet archive opens thousands of flickr accounts to store all their images
It's threads like these that make my Butt to Butt extension totally worth it.
Your right this makes everything better.
Maybe they'll incorporate flickr as tumblr's image/file host?
people load their porn collections into zips, rename to jpg
free porn backup

Got something big? Just stick it in the cloud! The cloud is ready for you at any time and exists to serve all your special needs. If you're not happy with the cloud, I can provide other more satisfying services.

Storage is cheap, especially for a company like Yahoo who probably goes to a manufacturer and buys an entire factory batch of drives in one go.
I mean the retail price rates put a value of about $16 (USD) on a TB of storage.

i installed it and i just fucking died not knowing what valkery said
How the fuck can you offer a terabyte of free image storage in the cloud?
They're basically saying unlimited storage for everybody. That's just a marketing campaign. They don't have 1TB of space reserved for anybody.
