So a few days ago my AC started blowing warm air, I haven't gotten it into a shop yet because today is my first day off after working several days in a row, but I've been calling around to get quotes and everyone is saying it's 99% most likely a freon leak and quoting me $150+ minimum which I honestly just can't afford to do until I make sure I have the money for bills together first. But then I started thinking, is it actually necessary to get it fixed ASAP? I've had friends who haven't had AC in years, and after this month the temperature is going to start cooling down anyway and then I'll have a decent chunk of time before it starts getting hot out again.
Can I damage my car by neglecting to get this fixed, or is it just going to be slightly uncomfortable for me? I can deal with driving with the window down, so if I can avoid shelling out money to get this done for a while I'd much rather do that than pay to fix the AC I'm really only going to need for maybe another month.
As long as the compressor isn't seized and squealing the belt, which you would certainly hear, there's really no damage that can occur. Just turn your A/C button off so the compressor isn't tempted to come on.
You can either spend ~40$ and get a freon recharge kit and attempt to recharge it and if that fixes it than so be.
Orrrrr you can save up 150$ and when they pull vaccume they discover a hole and will charge you 150$ again when that hole is fixed to refill it.
Me and my buddy are in the process of fixing his a/c right now. It's got a leak, which we found by buying one of those UV dye kits they sell for A/Cs, and it turns out it's around one of the hard line fittings that connects to the compressor. So like a $5 gasket and a bit of labor and it's fixed. I'd just look into whenever you've got free time, and some money to drop on one of those kits (It was like $30).
Or in my case since I had to replace a line, take the line off and replace all the O rings then put it all back together and fill er up.

You should probably pull a vacuum on your a/c after you open it up completely and then put it back together before anything else...
My AC leaked out aswell. There was a leak in the side of the condenser near the bottom. Youre not gonna harm anything. As some people said, get the AC dye kit for 20 bucks, put it in there and see what happens. Cost to fix could range from a couple bucks if its a bad o ring to like 75-100 if its the condenser or compressor. You better hope its not the evaporator because that things a pain in the ass.
Ive been driving my car without AC for a month in florida just because ive been waiting for rockauto to send me the right condensor undamaged.
When the airconditioning is actually off, it doesnt even spin the compressor as it has a clutch on the front of it. Youre harming nothing. If the compressor was shot, theres a little filter like thing i cant remember the name of that youre going to have to get a new one of because it will be full of metal.
More like $150-350 for a new compressor.

The compressor for my 89 camaro, AND the compressor for my brothers 79 camaro were $85 the other day on rockauto
most import compressors are much more expensive, and remember, you pay for quality. I doubt those $85 compressors will last very long.

Interesting, and possibly, but i guess ill never know.
I think it was a blowout
My AC hasn't been working since 1967.
Also Harbor freight should still be having sales on 3 cfm vacuums for pulling the system. I just got one for $100 for gluing some planks together in sealed bags. Just return it when you done and say it didn't work.
Noooooooo
That is what is killing harbor freight. They are slowing raising their prices to compensate for false returns.
They also look at you like a criminal when you return stuff now.
ALSO ALSO, they are now charging re-stocking fees for a lot of stuff now, so you can't even return it for a refund and buy it someplace else, you are forced to get the same thing if it doesn't work or face a fee.
I'm just giving him the cheap option of returning. Didnt know they gave issues now. If they charge you restocking then I say do it, that means they just technically rented it to you. No harm no foul. lol.
But mine I have to keep, because it works, and I need it. It does blow oil out the oil fill cap a lot, and I cant figure out why.
Ontopic of harbor freight I bought a electric chainsaw sharpener and the thing was completely junk I could grab the blade bare handed and stop the blade.
Went took it back and the manager was greatly intreaged with why I was taking it back and I told him I could stop the blade bare handed. He was like "Ohh man Really? They are that much of junk? Mind showing me?"
I get it out of the box, plug it in and let it spin up to its max rpm and grabed the sucker and I saw in the corner of my eye the manager flench like "AAAAAAAAAHHHH HES ACCULY GONN- What a crap product."
He let me get a new one, took it ou of the box and did the same thing. I could still grab the blade and stop it.
He let me have my money back and afew giggles wile we were talking back and forth of what I was gonna use it for. (Saw Mill Blades)
Bought one at Northern Tool and I don't even wanna get close to the son of a bitch with my hand.
Wouldn't that be a hilarious story to tell your grand kids about why you lost your fingers?

You don't put your fingers under it silly.
But it would be cooler than losing them to a lawn mower!
I deleted the AC on both of the trucks I've owned. Zero fucks given. Better things to throw my money at

Yeah my policy is that I don't pay for cold air. I personally wouldn't delete the AC system, however.
So you are the person who keeps stealing my cold air.

Please bring some cold air to California.
god bless

In theory, if everyone using the A/C opened all the doors and windows and shared with the rest of us, it would be colder outside.

Just be clear it was nonfunctioning on both
ok
