Most of the victims, many children among them, were summarily executed, the UN says. Residents said pro-government shabiha militia had entered homes and opened fire indiscriminately. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told UN-Arab League peace envoy Kofi Annan in Damascus that terrorists had stepped up their operations across Syria, including killing and kidnapping. His remarks were quoted by state TV. UN human rights spokesman Rupert Colville said initial investigations had suggested that most of those killed in the village of Taldou, near Houla, were summarily executed. He said 49 children and 34 women were among the victims. Eyewitnesses told the BBC that pro-government shabiha militiamen had carried out the killings. Survivors said they had hidden or played dead. UN observers who visited Taldou said many of the victims had been killed by close-range gunfire or knife attacks. Syrian leaders insist that the massacre was the work of "terrorists", aiming to derail the peace process and provoke intervention by Western powers. 'Heinous and brutal' US state department spokesperson Victoria Nuland announced that the Syrian charge d'affaires in Washington had been given 72 hours to leave the country. "We hold the Syrian government responsible for this slaughter of innocent lives [in Houla]," she said. Canada denounced the Syrian government's "heinous and murderous acts" while Australia described the Houla massacre as a "hideous and brutal crime". Spain talked of "unacceptable repression" and France's new Foreign Minister, Laurent Fabius, described President Assad as "the murderer of his people". The French government said "the murderous folly" of the Damascus regime threatened regional security. But despite the show of protest, it is unclear whether the mass diplomatic expulsions will change much on the ground, Bridget Kendall, the BBC's diplomatic correspondent, says. Syria's charge d'affaires in London has been given seven days to leave. "The international community is appalled by the violence that has continued, by the behaviour of the regime, by the murder of so many innocent people," British Foreign Secretary William Hague said. 'Frank' talks President Assad said the success of Mr Annan's peace plan depended on halting what he called terrorist actions and stopping arms-smuggling, according to state TV. Mr Annan conveyed "the grave concern of the international community about the violence in Syria, including in particular the recent events in Houla", the UN envoy's office was quoted as saying by AFP news agency. "He conveyed in frank terms his view to President Assad that the six-point plan cannot succeed without bold steps to stop the violence and release detainees, and stressed the importance of full implementation of the plan." Russia, which supplies arms to the Syrian government and has blocked UN resolutions calling for action against Damascus, has blamed both sides for Friday's massacre. Its Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, expressed concern that "certain countries" were beginning to use the Houla massacre "as a pretext for voicing demands relating to the need for military measures to be taken". A meeting of the so-called Friends of Syria group is to meet in France in July, President Francois Hollande's office said.
Good start.
This makes me think of each country as one individual "Heinous and murderous acts, eh!" said Canada, "Too fuckin' right mate, piss orf" said Australia, throwing an empty beer can at Syria as he trudged slowly out of the door. America didn't say anything because he's comatose thanks to heart failure.
You should only have veto for matters that concern your own country. The fact that Russia and China can stop anyone doing anything in Syria is ridiculous.
maybe if we throw more adjectives in syrias way theyll get really sad and stop
Fuck Syria.
Fuck Syria.
Fuck Bashar al-Assad.
Fuck Bashar al-Assad.
Fuck the king
China and Russia are not blindly backing Assad. In fact, both countries seek for a more peaceful resolution that doesn't end up in a fucking invasion http://chinadigitaltimes.net/2012/04/china-russia-agree-on-syria-and-north-korea/ http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/04/28/us-russia-china-idUSBRE83R0C720120428 http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2012/0321/breaking7.html
More out of their personal interests than care for the population being killed.
More out of their personal interests than care for the population being killed.
Because the west doesn't do this, or hasn't.
'way back at the start' is the keyword. Read the articles. Both have since changed their views, Assad is on his fucking own basically. Both China and Russia fully back Annan's plan which includes forcing Syria to retreat from population centers and cease all military actions against civilians.
Forcing them? The Assad plan was just to get Syria to agree to a ceasefire, there's no force involved
Good start.
Good late start. To little to late in my opinion.
This would be pretty awkward if it turned out to be terrorists.
49 fucking children? That is really awful...
Fuck the king
Fuck the king's guard
49 fucking children? That is really awful...
Well thousands of people have already been killed but I guess it took a few kids for people to finally notice.
Good late start. To little to late in my opinion.
I agree 100%. However, I'm glad at least some sort of action was taken as a direct result of the massacres. So, here's hoping it's the beginning of some more action for the sake of the Syrian rebels/populace.
