Pope Francis calls on every European parish to host one refugee family
Pope Francis called on Sunday on every European church parish and religious community to take in one refugee family in a gesture of solidarity, which he said would start in the tiny Vatican state where he lives.
"I appeal to the parishes, the religious communities, the monasteries and sanctuaries of all Europe to ... take in one family of refugees," he said after his Sunday address in the papal enclave.
The pope's call goes out to tens of thousands of Catholic parishes in Europe as the number of refugees and migrants arriving over land through the Balkans and across the Mediterranean to Italy and Greece hits record levels.

"It is violence to build walls and barriers to stop those who look for a place of peace. It is violence to push back those who flee inhuman conditions in the hope of a better future," he said in a letter to a Church association meeting in Albania.
The Vatican's two parishes will take in a family of refugees each in the coming days, said Francis, whose first trip after his election in 2013 was to the Italian island of Lampedusa, halfway between Sicily and Tunisia, where many refugees and migrants arrive by boat.
They're going to smear shit all over the walls!
No, but imagine getting the worst family and being stuck with them.
Thank god I'm not Catholic.
Some of them already don't want help from the Red Cross because of the cross, I doubt it would work that well

the thought that coun'ts.?

If that's true, that's pretty much madness. Starve, or die of dehydration (and watch your kids go before you) or accept help from an organisation with a questionably Christian logo, who wants nothing but to help you. And people reject the help? Priorities need to be straightened out...

By some of them, which ones and how many are you talking about and what relevance does it have? :v:
This is gonna be very interesting.

Oh god, man that one bit of misinformation really completely fucked over refugees didn't it?
Those refugees weren't refusing aid because of the crosses on the boxes, but because they were protesting the fact that the military forces that were handing out the aid were a part of the military force that beat the fuck out of some other refugees while they searched those other refugees' camp.
As far as I know, they did beat refugees but just because they are forcing their way to Germany and were not registered yet. You know, it's not insane to register unknown/new people who come into EU.

You know that there's an explicit Red Crescent organisation which is part of the Red Cross, designed to help people in the Middle East who are uncomfortable with the cross due to its history, right?

Reddit seems to think this is how the world ends. The real xenophobes came out on that site and it was disgusting

That's not what I was talking about. I was talking about an incident down in the Balkans (AKA where those people were refusing red cross aid were at) where some military forces of some country (not sure exactly) crossed the border into another country to search a refugee camp, and some of the subordinates who were a bunch of assholes beat some of the refugees for simply trying to get into Europe.

If the reasonable ones take the help, then it works.
You know what's sad?
Refugee family members who have country preferences.
They don't want to settle/stay in some countries, they prefer the Western ones vs the Eastern.
That's why you see the awful pics taken in Hungary, people who really want to take refugees in and help out, but some refugees refused, deciding to move to the West...

I guess these countries dodged a bullet.

Refusing =/= throwing away
I wonder if Vatican city itself will take on any refugees.
Err.. No.
Shit's hard enough as it is.

Isn't Sweden's right wing nationalist party rapidly gaining votes because mass immigration put their welfare system under such heavy load that native Swedes are being left behind?

Yeah, pretty much. It's just they took in too many immigrants, and it was less about their welfare system under heavy load and more that the culture of the immigrants didn't mix well because the government was afraid to do anything about the culture of the immigrants for fear of being called racists. Arguably some western countries still have room for more immigrants before it starts to become a problem.

afaik they didn't accept it because of the police treatment
it's still silly, but it wasn't due to the cross
Isn't Sweden's right wing nationalist party rapidly gaining votes because mass immigration put their welfare system under such heavy load that native Swedes are being left behind?
No one is being "left behind". There are problems with the welfare sure but they are not as grave as the Sweden Democrats make them seem, and they certainly aren't the fault of immigrants. It's just your typical right-wing populist propaganda. If anything, the problems are due to the privatization of welfare leading to private employers cutting corners in order to make as much money as possible. With so many immigrants working with elderly care etc I'd say they are the ones sustaining our welfare.
I wonder if Vatican city itself will take on any refugees.
They're taking on two families themselves – to me that doesn't sound like much at all obviously, though Vatican City is extremely small and they don't have a lot of civilians living there from what I know. Still could fit in more there.
