"With all that Congress has to work on, do they really have to make the weakening of the Independent Ethics Watchdog, as unfair as it ... may be, their number one act and priority. Focus on tax reform, healthcare and so many other things of far greater importance! #DTS," Trump said over two consecutive tweets. House Republican voted 119-74 -- breaking with party leaders -- during a closed-door meeting in favor of Virginia Rep. Bob Goodlatte's proposal, which would place the independent Office of Congressional Ethics under the control of those very lawmakers, a move that outraged Democrats and outside ethics organizations. The change in rules carries the appearance of House members taking power away from the office that can investigate them for misconduct, at a time when Republicans are about to have control of two branches of government with a mandate for shaking up Washington.
CNN UPDATE: GOP has withdrawn proposal http://www.npr.org/2017/01/03/508043376/after-trump-tweets-criticism-house-gop-drops-weakening-of-house-ethics-office
After a storm of criticism, including from President-elect Donald Trump, House Republicans have reversed themselves and restored the current rules of the Office of Congressional Ethics. GOP members met Tuesday afternoon and agreed by unanimous consent to withdraw a change to House rules approved late Monday evening, before the new Congress was sworn in, that would have weakened the ethics office, an independent watchdog first established in 2008 under House Democrats.
I mean, he's at least half right I don't know how that ethics panel is "unfair" though
I got an alert on my phone saying "GOP moves to gut ethics watchdog" and groaned from anger, then was shocked to see trump was against it.
I got an alert on my phone saying "GOP moves to gut ethics watchdog" and groaned from anger, then was shocked to see trump was against it.
He's not really against it. Just against its priority
Far too easy for him to say something like this publicly while doing nothing to stop it- effectively deflecting criticism away from him while he lets things like this happen right under his nose. The real test will be if he ever vetoes anything like this that he's supposedly against.
what could he do to stop it? he isn't even the president yet
He doesn't want to stop it, he clearly says that in the tweet. CNN just has awful title creators. Apparently though there was a emergency meeting at 11:50 this morning, (7 minutes ago) due to backlash so hopefully something changes.

Wow, that was quick.
Probably because he recognizes what an absurdly dumb PR move it is for their party. I wonder if he realizes that those crooks are liable to turn on him once he is in office. Can't imagine being comfortable being on the same side as people who want to gut ethics oversight.
Didn't the GOP absolutely despise him up until the moment he was elected?
Of course they did, he really didn't seem like he a shot at winning at all. Everyone was decrying his initial victory as the death of the Republican Party. I'm sure that even now he's not a popular figure. They are going to (try to) manipulate the shit out of him. Imagine seeing the Pied Piper rhetoric coming from the Democrats as a high ranking Republican or one of their candidates.

Nice that it was delayed, but concerning that he's calling independent ethics committees "unfair" considering that he based his entire campaign on stamping out corruption. On what basis is he saying that it is unfair?
Only Democrats can be corrupt, obviously. #lockherup
No more emails are allowed - now, Democrats only are allowed to send messages via courier. There, the swamp has been drained!
