Pakistani Taliban's choice of leader signals an ominous turn

Mullah Fazlullah is deemed to be more ruthless and ideologically driven than his predecessors, as his recent leadership of a parallel state in Pakistan's Swat Valley makes clear.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — The appointment of Mullah Fazlullah as head of the Pakistani Taliban signals a significant shift for the militant organization into a potentially more uncompromising, violent group based increasingly on ideology rather than tribal ties, analysts said.
Fazlullah, a hard-liner from Pakistan's Swat Valley, was named Thursday after his predecessor was killed days earlier by a U.S. drone strike as he emerged from a meeting at a mosque in lawless North Waziristan near the Afghan border.
Since 2009, Fazlullah has continued to order killings from Afghanistan. In September, his fighters killed a Pakistani army general and a lieutenant colonel in a roadside bomb attack, which he celebrated in a video.
"Military chiefs, top politicians and top government officials in Islamabad and Punjab are our specific targets," interim Taliban head Asmatullah Shaheen told news organizations Thursday, adding in an oft-repeated claim that ordinary people need not fear, even though thousands have been killed. "We will not target civilians, bazaars or public places."

The article says this guy is cruel even by Taliban standards. Well fuck
...Imagine him having to fire his AUG left-handed due to some odd reason, and his beard getting stuck in the action. :v:

Worst part is he's put the founder of the Haqqani network as his second in command. This is not good, not good at all.
What's not to say he will be killed by a predator drone by next year.

Not likely.
[sp]The Predator is being phased out in favour of the Reaper.[/sp]
[sp]Predator's main flaw was that it's name wasn't ominous enough.[/sp]

If he's clever, he'll likely learn from the mistakes of his predecessor. This guy, so far, has been doing all of his killings via assassins and remotely - he might very well learn to be more discreet.

Yes, because Osama Bin Laden was such a moderate free thinker.

And Bin Laden was, of course, the leader of Taliban and totally not Al Quaeda.
How can a terrorist have a counter-terrorist weapon?
VAC will get that guy!
Can't wait for him to get blown to pieces by a drone and have another guy take his place only to get exploded a week later

And Osama was also in a compound near a Pakistan army base.
If anything the US learned that they should search in buildings near Pakistan military buildings.

Oops. Let's not blow it up out of proportion.
Just blow this idiot up like everybody else, and before that happens, put holes in every other terrorist who tries something funny.

very pragmatic
So now the race is on to see what runs out first, taliban leaders or drone missles.
If the Taliban consider him cruel I'm terrified to imagine what this means for the region.
Where the hell did he get a Steyr? Did he have it shipped to him from Syria or something?

I assume he bought it.
I assume he bought it.
Who from though, that's what I'm asking.
I'd assume from someone in Syria, a lot of Steyrs were sent there early in the war, when the west was still supporting the rebels.

According to wiki, the Pakistani Army uses them, among other things. Maybe they captured it.
He probably just uses it as a prop. I can't imagine it's worth the hassle of getting ammunition and parts for.

Because 5.56x45 is notoriously hard to come by, especially in a country with parial usage of M4s, AUGs and F2000s.

Possibly Saudi issue? IIRC, the Saudi army uses Steyr AUG's in their army. Weapons could've made it to these guys.
edit: User Car Salesman is correct, they are also used by Pakistan SSG and the police as well. Possibly a "liberated" one.

Blow what out of proportion, if you don't know what the fuck you are talking about don't make statements like you do, its very simple.

Horrific cunt, I hate to think what life is like under these pricks. Are women even allowed to speak?

Theres not really any hassle, theres huge amount of 5.56 stocks in the region and if parts are necessary he's probably got a hookup in pakistan. Theres a lot of neighboring countries that have used AUG clones at one point or are currently using them.
Mind you I doubt they are bothering to replace parts, just drop it when it gets to the point when regular cleaning doesn't let it function reliably.
