France considers age of sexual consent to be set at 13 years old
A bill being prepared by the French government could set a minimum legal age for sexual consent for the first time, and the country's justice minister says she thinks 13 could be a reasonable age.
Justice Minister Nicole Belloubet told France's RTL radio network that age 13 was a "limit that is worth considering" for the upcoming legislation, but noted that judges should also have the ability to assess whether someone was old enough to give consent in individual situations.
"The question of the age below which the minor's consent is presumed not to exist is crucial, because there are obviously extremely shocking and unacceptable situations," Ms Belloubet said.
I presume they mean between minors?

Um, doesn't look like it reading the article.
Why not set it at something reasonable like 16 and then implement Romeo and Juliet laws?
Anybody who actually supports legalising sex between an 18 year old and a 13 year old is a closet pedophile, imo.

It's currently already the case (somewhat). When I lived there, the age of consent was 15 years and 3 months, after which you could sleep with anyone who was below 18 I believe. There would sometimes be cases where the courts would allow relationships to continue outside of these restrictions if the relationship began within them (eg 16-year-old dating 17-year-old, is legal, but a year later, it would be illegal but permitted).

A thing to note is that while any sexual activity was permitted, it was never permitted for pictures to be shared between people below 18 years, as that would be distribution of CP.

It's not gonna be legalized, it's still gonna be sexual abuse charges if you have sex with someone over 13 but under 15, under 13 and you get rape charges on top of that. This is an improvement in france.

The title makes it seem like theyre lowering age of consent.
The news here for everyone should be that we previously didn’t have a set-in-stone age of consent. There’s been calls for one to be set after some men got away with fucking 11 year-old girls in the last few months. In case the article didn’t make that clear enough for everyone.

France has a system in place which establishes every given law that is established must be accompanied with an additional law being repealed, in order to prevent a legal overload of sorts. Introducing several bills one after the other would go against this general philosophy of keeping things relatively compact and streamlined.
Establishing the age of consent at a low enough age so that children who cannot have possibly reached puberty are protected while children who begin to be old enough to have sex with each other can still do so is not a bad idea. Not to mention that we already consider sex between an adult and someone below 15 years old to be sexual abuse, thus rendering romeo and juliet laws pointless.

Good thing an 18 year old is legally an adult and thus cannot have sex with anyone below 15.
Nothing gross about it, it's just allowing teenagers to be teenagers. Nothing about adults fucking 13 years old like the sensationalist headline wants you to think.

i mean when i was 13 i hadn't even had lessons about sex/sexual health, its hardly letting "teens be teens" when they've only JUST become a teenager

I think that's more telling of the quality of your local sex ed than anything else

Where do you live? Here I had lessons on that when I entered middle school, so at 11 years old. Granted, they were not that great, but at least they teach you about condoms and birth control. I had my first relationship with a 14yo when I was 15, and that was considered late by some of my friends.
every time this comes up I say the same thing, in hungary it's 14, I know many people including myself that lost their virginity at or around that age, and everyone has become a well adjusted member of society
hormones kick in and teens want to bone, might as well avoid them not knowing what the fuck is going on and having to do it in secrecy. if you disallow something they will do regardless the risks pile up.
brb moving to france.
Two recent court cases have heightened the debate over who is old enough to consent to sex under French law.
A jury last week acquitted a 30-year-old man who was accused of raping an 11-year-old girl in 2009, French media reported.
The jury in the Paris suburb region of Seine-et-Marne found while there had been a sexual relationship between the girl and the man, it did not constitute rape according to the legal definition of the crime in France.
French media also have reported the prosecutor's office in the city of Pontoise near Paris decided in September a 28-year-old man suspected of having sex with an 11-year-old girl should be tried for sexual abuse instead of rape because of how French law defines rape.
French law defines rape as any act of sexual penetration committed on others "by violence, coercion, threat or surprise".
The definition does not distinguish between adults and minors for either the victims or perpetrators, although the potential criminal penalty is higher when victims are under 15.
A minimum age of sexual consent does not currently exist in French law.
Just wow.... So much to unpackage there.

are there ever any exceptions made because i can see this system having some issues.
