The flamethrower DID work but if you had been paying attention you'd have noticed that when the blood reacted it startled him and he dropped it.

did you even watch it yourself? it's attached to him via the backpack part.
not to mention the part where he tries to fire but it just spits out a couple puffs of flame.
ontopic: many people hate me for this but i saw the thing as a pretty meh movie ..i mean the effects are amazing but something just never got me into the whole "holyfuckawesome" mood most people have when this movie is mentioned and the end kinda dissapointed me

Why would you use a flamethrower in close quarters? Also why tie all of the potential suspects together when you know one of them is a man-eating monster?
Because then they can't get away, and they had no other weapons, and watch the fucking movie.
