Daww... Poor guy.
Fuck man....he was in his prime and was on track to smashing it in the upcoming Tests...
I can't imagine how the guy who threw the ball is feeling. He didn't set out to do it intentionally but he must be at rock bottom at the moment.
They grew up together as well. He must feel awful.
yesterday i was bummed because the whole round of shield matches had been called off because he was in hospital i guess this kind of puts it in perspective hey

Horrible news. Watching the incident was sickening enough before you considered that this could have been the outcome. Freak accident. I don't know how Abbott will come back from this, feel more sorry for him than anyone else. Just awful.
After this cricket administrations will hear much debate over padding and protection standards. There should hopefully be a way to avoid this if it ever happens again, freak accident or not.
I always cringe when a baseball gets hit near the pitcher, I can't imagine a cricket ball.
I'm absolutely speechless. My heart goes out to his family, friends, teammates and fans. This so soon after serious injuries to Michael Schumacher and Jules Bianchi too, sport is having a pretty rough patch it seems. It does go to show that we've been pretty lucky up until now though, there have been a lot of batsmen over the years hit in the head by fast bouncers and none of them have been seriously hurt (Ricky Ponting was even hit in the head without a helmet against Pakistan IIRC, though I don't think that was a fast bowler). I remember first hearing about Phil Hughes around 2009 just before The Ashes, he was on an absolutely monstrous run of form and was looking like a modern-day Bradman with an average already above 60 that wouldn't stop climbing. Unfortunately he didn't seem able to sustain it and he spent a few years in and around the team never quite able to hold a place, but this guy still had it in him to have a great career as a world beating batsman. What a damn shame.
Yeah, but at the same time Phillip was just really unlucky. I heard the injury he got, there has only been about 100 recorded cases EVER - not just to do with cricket, but due to anyway. Even in this video: at 1:08 someone gets hit near where Phillip was - and by a faster bowler. I think the video sums up for those not familiar with the game with what is allowed.
